2015 Talent Development Artist - Effects Apprentice

The Effects Apprentice: 

Effects artists are the magicians of the production pipeline, controlling particles in ways that are unnatural to science and physics, but believable and emotional to the audience.  They often redefine gravity, or plan for none at all, to create new physical realms.  For every moving thing that is not a character, an effects artist has composed particles of light, dust, rain, even candy canes to set the tone and mood of the story. They are challenged to create the unexpected and to invoke an emotional impact in support of the creative vision.

Reels/portfolios/demonstrated skills should include:
• Technical proficiency inspired by art
• A strong understanding of animation fundamentals, design, and composition
• An understanding of how structural elements, physical dynamics, and natural forces inform effects animation
• Experience with particle systems or other advanced techniques
• Experience using commercial graphics packages including Maya and/or Houdini
• Experience with scripting and programming, (Python, H-script, MEL, RSL, or C ) and Linux operating system experience a plus
• Exposure to shaders, lighting, and compositing as well as Renderman
• Strong communication skills with the ability to brainstorm and collaborate in a team setting to reimagine, prototype, or even fake an effect
