The A Side: A Day in The Life
At the core of UMG’s mission is the dual objective of managing an enormous catalogue of music recordings as well as identifying new, emerging and promising artists, often via the recordings they produce. This objective requires the ability to understand musical audio recordings. The ever-growing volume of music being produced brings the additional challenge of scaling this process, which cannot rely on manual labour.
The premise for this internship is that UMG must handle music recordings that come not only in vast quantities but also with widely varying esthetic and production quality. The aim of this project is to investigate methods to automatically learn representations of properties of music recordings, such as production quality or overall “sound”, with the aim for this to support innovative search, discovery and scouting functions at scale.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and test audio-based approaches at the intersection of Music Information Retrieval (MIR), machine learning and digital audio processing, as well as communicating results and liaising with the stakeholders.
The B Side: Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate should have or be working towards a Master’s degree or PhD in Music Information Retrieval (MIR), Machine Learning, Digital Signal Processing or related field, and/or have equivalent relevant qualification/experience.
