As a Director, Litigation, Business and Legal Affairs, you will provide legal support to our record labels and global business units with a primary focus on litigation. This role will report to the Senior Vice President, Head of U.S. Litigation, Business and Legal Affairs.
What you'll do:
• Support the Head of U.S. Litigation on a variety of litigation, enforcement matters, and prelitigation claims. Counsel business units on a wide range of matters including copyright
• Legal Counseling
• Regularly counsel U.S. record labels and global business units on various matters (e.g., risk mitigation, litigation, intellectual property, compliance, contract interpretation, draft contract language, and company policies and procedures).
• Conduct pre-release review of videos, artwork, lyrics and other creative content for copyright, trademark, publicity rights, First Amendment, and other legal issues.
• Litigation
• Manage and drive strategy for affirmative and defensive litigations, arbitrations, regulatory proceedings, third-party claims, and other intellectual property enforcement matters in federal, state, and foreign jurisdictions.
• Pursue and manage Sony Music’s intellectual property and brand enforcement matters; prepare cease-and-desist letters; investigate and respond to DSP takedowns and intermediary liability claims; liaise with external business partners on related matters.
• Draft and negotiate settlement agreements and related licenses.
• Represent Sony Music in mediations and at trial; prepare company witnesses for depositions and trial testimony.
• Review and provide comments on briefs, pleadings, mediation statements, and other written submissions.
• Handle all aspects of litigation discovery together with outside counsel, Sony Music’s record labels, and its business units.

Who you are:
• Law Degree required
• 4-7 years of experience at a law firm or as in-house counsel
• Strong experience in litigation and significant knowledge of copyright and other intellectual property law
• Experience with and/or knowledge of the music industry [a plus]
• Demonstrated ability to build trusted advisor relationships with internal clients, and to provide legal advice and support to internal non-legal stakeholders
• Strong negotiation skills and work ethic
• Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, emotional intelligence, good judgment, problem-solving skills, and intellectual curiosity
• Member of New York Bar in good standing
Salary/Benefits
$155,000 - $180,000 /year USD
The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors.
