The Athletic Development Coach is responsible for designing and delivering an integrated athletic development program that supports player performance, availability, and long-term development. This role focuses on developing strength, movement quality, coordination, and reconditioning while ensuring transfer to basketball performance. This is a full-time, on-site position in San Antonio, Texas, working daily with the San Antonio Spurs (NBA) and supporting the Austin Spurs (G-League).
The Athletic Development Coach will serve as a key practitioner within Player Performance & Wellness, collaborating closely with coaching, performance, medical, and sport science staff to translate performance priorities into individualized training strategies and ensure alignment across departments.
This role also contributes to an integrated performance model by supporting player development, return-to-play processes, and the consistent execution of training strategies across gym and on-court environments.
What You'll Do:
• Design and implement individualized athletic development programs to support performance, movement efficiency, and robustness.
• Prescribe and coach strength, power, and movement sessions, ensuring high-quality execution across all training environments.
• Progress athletes from general physical qualities to basketball-specific outputs.
• Design and implement on-court reconditioning and movement-development sessions that support transfer to basketball performance.
• Integrate coordination, variability, and appropriate perceptual demands into training to enhance adaptability and transfer.
• Support return-to-play and return-to-performance processes through progressive exposure to sport-specific demands.
• Maintain accurate training records and collaborate with staff to support monitoring, communication, and decision-making.
• Assist with operational and logistical elements of the athletic development program.
Who You Are:
• Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred in Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Sports Science, or related field.
• Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) required.
• Current CPR/AED certification required.
• 5 years of experience in elite or professional sport, ideally in basketball or comparable team-sport environments.
• Strong expertise in strength and conditioning, movement development, and return-to-performance.
• Experience working collaboratively with coaching, performance, medical, and sport science staff.
• Ability to translate performance priorities into effective, individualized training strategies.
• Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of maintaining consistent training documentation and communication.
Physical Requirements:
The Athletic Development Coach must be able to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and work in varied environments, including training facilities and game venues. This role requires a non-traditional schedule, including evenings, weekends, and travel as needed to support team operations.
