Rolling Stone: Staff Writer, Hip Hop
Rolling Stone, the leading voice of popular culture for more than 50 years, is adding a Staff Writer specializing in hip-hop to our Music Department — writing features, criticism and reported stories.
Job Description:
Join our talented team in a fast-paced and fun Midtown newsroom, expanding your career as a Staff Writer. The ideal candidate has at least three years of experience in music writing; expertise in hip-hop is a must, though you’ll be free to write about music of all kinds. Reporting experience, both news and features, is a big plus as well. This is a very active newsroom, and the staff writer will be responsible for an average of three stories per week, though there will be ample opportunities for longform features for both print and digital.
Responsibilities:
• Write features, interviews, and criticism on current popular music, especially hip-hop.
• Pursue reported investigations and scoops.
• Help shape Rolling Stone’s music coverage.
• Contribute to lists, audio and video projects, and social-native fare.
• Brainstorm ideas with other reporters, editors, photographers, video producers, and social media managers.
Requirements:
• 3 years of experience in music journalism
• The ability to juggle several stories and projects at the same time and keep a cool head under pressure
• A proven track record of delivering exclusive and high-quality material on deadline
• A deep knowledge of popular music, especially current hip-hop
• Familiarity with digital news gathering tools
• A commitment to collaborating with colleagues at every level of the organization
We believe our newsroom should represent the communities we cover and our readership. Women, people of color, and LGBTQ candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
