Cultural Travel Reporter
Rolling Stone
Remote, USThis is a Full Time Job
DESCRIPTION:
Rolling Stone: Culture and Travel Reporter
We’re looking for a cultural travel reporter – part journalist, part documentarian, part creator – who can explore and uncover the untold stories of America’s diverse communities. This is not a traditional travel influencer gig. We're not interested in the top 10 taco spots in Austin or where to find $30 flights. We want someone who can get lost in the soul of a place. This position is New York based with frequent domestic travel.
You will create compelling multimedia stories that capture history, subculture, food, identity, and even the ghosts that still walk those streets. Short-form and long-form video, written features, photo essays, and/or audio – centered on local cultures across the U.S. We’re looking for a person that can chase the stories that America forgot to tell.
What You’ll Do:
• Travel across the United States to explore unique and underrepresented communities, subcultures, and regional histories.
• Research, pitch, and develop original story concepts – with depth, not just aesthetics.
• Produce engaging, narrative-driven content in your voice and perspective: video, written features, photography, or a combination of formats.
• Interview local voices – chefs, artists, elders, historians, bartenders, drag queens, urban cowboys, etc.
• Collaborate with our editorial and production teams to shape each story for publication across platforms (YouTube, social, site, podcast, etc.).
• Cover everything from food to folklore, music to migration, grit to ghost stories.
We’re Looking for Someone Who:
• Is a natural storyteller with a journalistic mind and a creative heart.
• Has experience producing editorial or documentary-style content (video, written, or audio).
• Can build trust and rapport with communities quickly and respectfully.
• Thrives in unfamiliar places and knows how to find the story beyond the surface.
• Understands the difference between cultural appreciation and exploitation – and has a deep respect for authenticity.
• Is comfortable being on-camera (or voicing) if needed, but doesn’t need to be the star.
• Can work independently and isn’t afraid to wander off the beaten path.
It’s a Plus if You:
• Speak multiple languages.
• Have a background in journalism, anthropology, filmmaking, or cultural studies.
• Know how to shoot and edit your own content.
• Have a unique voice or on-camera presence that people connect with.
