Role Overview
We are seeking a proactive and relationship-driven Press Relations Coordinator to manage media outreach, cultivate journalist relationships, and amplify the visibility of our film slate across Canadian and international media. You will be the primary liaison between Ritual, our filmmakers, and the press—ensuring our films receive thoughtful, strategic coverage that aligns with our curatorial values.
This role requires someone who understands the cultural landscape of independent cinema, can craft compelling narratives, and thrives in building authentic relationships with media partners.
Key Responsibilities
Media Relations & Outreach
• Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, critics, editors, and cultural media across print, digital, broadcast, and podcast platforms
• Pitch films strategically to targeted media contacts, tailoring story angles to each outlet and journalist
• Respond to media inquiries promptly and professionally, coordinating interview requests and screening access
• Maintain and update press contact databases; track media coverage and compile press reports
• Monitor press coverage of Ritual's films and compile clips, quotes, and performance metrics
Press Materials & Communications
• Write, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, and press kits
• Collaborate with the creative team to develop compelling press materials including synopses, filmmaker bios, production notes, and Q&As
• Ensure all press materials reflect Ritual's editorial voice and are culturally sensitive and accurate
• Coordinate with external publicists when applicable and ensure alignment on messaging and strategy
Press Events & Screenings
• Plan and execute press screenings, premieres, Q&As, and media events
• Manage press lists, accreditation, and RSVPs for screenings and events
• Coordinate on-site press logistics at festivals, theatrical openings, and special events
• Brief filmmakers and talent on media engagements and accompany them to interviews when needed
Strategic Planning & Reporting
• Develop tailored press strategies for each film release in collaboration with distribution and marketing teams
• Track industry trends, competitor activity, and media landscape shifts
• Provide regular reports on press coverage, reach, sentiment, and impact
• Identify partnership opportunities with cultural organizations, festivals, and community groups for co-promotion
Profile
Essential Skills & Experience
• 2–5 years of experience, with demonstrated strength in press relations, ideally within the film, arts, or cultural sector
• Strong network of media contacts in Canadian cultural media (or proven ability to build one quickly)
• Strong writing skills in English; comfort working in a bilingual (EN/FR) environment
• Deep knowledge of and passion for independent, international, and auteur cinema
• Understanding of the Canadian media landscape
• Strong interpersonal skills; comfortable engaging with filmmakers, journalists, and industry professionals
• Highly organized with excellent project management skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple releases simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines
• Familiarity with media monitoring tools, CRM systems, and press tracking platforms (or the ability to learn quickly)
Assets
• Existing relationships with film critics, cultural journalists, and festival programmers
• Experience working with international sales agents, festival publicists, or distribution companies
• Experience coordinating press at film festivals (TIFF, FNC, Berlinale, etc.)
