General Counsel, Production (Inside Edition)
Overview:
CBS Media Ventures is seeking Counsel with extensive experience in news and media law, transactions, and digital distribution to work on its award-winning daily, half-hour, nationally syndicated television newsmagazine INSIDE EDITION and INSIDE EDITION’s digital platforms and streaming service. INSIDE EDITION focuses on human interest stories and investigative reports, as well as exclusive newsmaker interviews and behind-the-scenes coverage of top national stories. INSIDE EDITION publishes in a demanding and fast-paced environment requiring quick and creative thinking and rapid-response counseling, swift and sound risk assessment, and exemplary judgment.
Counsel will work with an experienced Senior Vice President in Legal Affairs to advise the INSIDE EDITION production teams on all aspects of newsgathering, pre-publication content review (including defamation, copyright, and privacy issues), post-publication matters, and will also be responsible for contract drafting and review.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Serve as legal and Standards & Practices advisor for all creative materials, including scripts, graphics, and in-show visual elements, to ensure broadcast viability.
• Conduct legal review and risk assessment, including evaluating fair use issues, and provide clear, practical guidance to creative executives.
• Draft and negotiate production-related agreements, including integration agreements, licensing agreements, vendor agreements, and releases.
Basic Qualifications
• JD degree with exemplary academic credentials; admitted to the New York Bar.
• 4 years’ experience in news review and media law and/or litigation.
• Strong expertise in copyright, right of publicity, fair use, defamation law, contract law, intellectual property rights (as applicable to the entertainment industry), and hands-on experience working within network Standards & Practices frameworks.
• Experience with contract drafting and review, including talent agreements, digital distribution (including streaming), technology and content licensing, production, and services agreements.
