NPR is expanding the Wait Wait comedic universe! What does that mean? We’re hiring a Production Assistant to help us create funny new podcasts— so if you like having fun at work but know it takes a lot of work to get that fun on air, we’re looking for you. Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! is one of NPR’s most popular shows and one of the most successful comedy podcasts in the country. Wait Wait wants to build on this enthusiasm and attract new listeners. You will be working closely with a small team in all areas of the production of a new comedy podcast and other new projects. Candidates should be highly organized, attentive to detail, great problem solvers and hungry to learn and seek out opportunities.
This role will involve supporting the needs of the team in all areas, specifically research, social media and audio production. Production Assistants will be highly involved in conducting research necessary to produce episodes. This includes finding and evaluating guests, tracking down sources and performing in-depth research into a variety of topics.
Creating a social media presence is an important part of the Production Assistant’s weekly work flow. A demonstrated ability to use social media as a tool to promote new projects and connect with listeners is a must.
Candidates should be familiar with the voice of Wait Wait and be excited about comedy and up and coming comedians. Production Assistants will need to demonstrate the ability to work well on a team and work efficiently under weekly deadlines. Ideal applicants are great problem solvers and are ready to help assist in all areas of production. The Production Assistant is ideally based in New York, or Chicago.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work on a team developing a midweek comedy podcast.
• Support hosts and producers on multiple creative projects that establish and extend Wait Wait’s comedic voice.
• Create and sustain a successful social media presence, with the goal of growing an audience
• Create digital content (graphics and video) for social media platforms
• Conduct varied and in-depth research
• Consistent research directed at finding new voices and knowledge of the current comedy scene
• Meet daily and weekly production deadlines for each episode and project
• Participate in all areas of podcast production including audio editing, script writing, research and editorial meetings.
• Record and edit multi-track audio stories
• Handle some logistical planning and communications for a small team
• Screen callers and book on-air talent
• Pitch ideas, guests and narratives and contributes to a writing-room environment
• Work with host, producers, and others in all tasks necessary to complete or supplement a piece.
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
• Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Experience in podcasting, broadcasting, and / or audio production
• Experience working in comedy
• Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth research on a variety of topics
• Demonstrated ability to create and sustain a social media presence and conduct promotional on-line campaigns.
• Demonstrated ability to edit complex, multitrack audio stories
• Demonstrated ability to support the production process in audio editing, research scheduling guests, recording interviews, field production, script writing and other production needs
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively
• Interested in current events and the news
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system

This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum salary for this position is $60,000.
