Overview:
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Assistant/Junior Paralegal will support the organization's efforts to enhance venue safety, operational resilience, security program memorialization, facility safety plan and compliance with federal standards, including initiatives related to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's SAFETY Act (Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies Act). SAFETY Act submission and compliance-related responsibilities are expected to comprise up to 50% of the position's workload. Additionally, the position will provide legal, administrative, compliance, and risk-management support to the Club's in-house General Counsel and Sr. Director of Risk Management. This role will assist with a broad range of legal and operational matters, including contract administration, litigation support, insurance and claims coordination, policy management, records organization, compliance tracking, and day-to-day legal department operations.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, discreet, and comfortable working in a fast-paced professional sports environment with competing priorities and confidential matters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Legal Department Support
• Assist in the development, organization, and maintenance of documentation required for SAFETY Act certification and related submissions.
• Serve as clearinghouse for security programming, SAFETY Act, facility safety plan supporting documentation and serve as liaison with SAFETY Act consultant
• Assist the Legal Department with day-to-day matters, including contracts, corporate records, correspondence, calendaring, and legal filings for Angels Baseball, Angels Baseball Foundation, AM830 KLAA, and Angels Baseball Television (ABTV).
• Review, organize, track, and maintain contracts, corporate documents, amendments, certificates of insurance, releases, waivers, and related legal documents.
• Prepare initial drafts of routine legal documents, correspondence, contract summaries, memoranda, and internal reports under attorney supervision.
• Maintain legal files, matter trackers, contract databases, document retention systems, and other departmental records.
• Coordinate execution of agreements, including routing documents for internal approvals, signatures, and final storage.
• Assist with legal research, factual investigations, document review, and preparation of materials related to legal matters.
• Support litigation, arbitration, claims, subpoenas, public records requests, and discovery matters, including gathering and organizing responsive documents.
• Monitor key legal deadlines, renewal dates, notice periods, and compliance obligations.
• Coordinate with outside counsel, vendors, insurance representatives, Club personnel, and MLB representatives as needed.
Risk Management Support
• Assist the Risk Management Department with insurance, claims, incident reporting, safety documentation, and risk-related recordkeeping.
• Maintain insurance policies, certificates of insurance, claims files, incident reports, loss runs, and related documentation.
• Assist with intake, tracking, and coordination of general liability, workers' compensation, property, auto, and other claims.
• Coordinate with internal departments regarding incident reports, witness statements, supporting documentation, and follow-up information.
• Review vendor, event, facility, and operational documentation for insurance and risk-management requirements.
• Support risk assessments, audit responses, safety initiatives, and compliance efforts across Club operations.
• Help maintain risk-management calendars, reporting logs, and related departmental trackers.
Cross-Functional and Administrative Support
• Serve as a liaison between the legal/risk management functions and internal departments including Human Resources, Finance, Stadium Operations, Security, Ticketing, Partnerships, Marketing, Community Relations, Baseball Operations, and Events.
• Assist with internal policy updates, employee acknowledgments, training records, compliance communications, and departmental procedures.
• Prepare reports, presentations, spreadsheets, summaries, and meeting materials for legal and risk-management matters.
• Schedule meetings, manage calendars, coordinate logistics, and assist with administrative tasks for assigned legal and risk-related projects.
• Handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
• Support special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree, paralegal certificate, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Strong understanding of legal processes, document management, contract administration, and legal department operations.
• Experience reviewing, organizing, and maintaining contracts, corporate records, legal correspondence, pleadings, policies, and other confidential legal documents.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail and sound judgment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact professionally with attorneys, business stakeholders, outside counsel, vendors, and other third parties.
• High degree of discretion and professionalism in handling confidential, privileged, and sensitive information.
• Strong research, organizational, and analytical skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with legal technology platforms, including contract management systems, matter management tools, e-billing systems, document management platforms, or legal research tools.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a legal or business team.
• Working knowledge of corporate governance, workers' compensation, litigation support, employment law, commercial contracting, or intellectual property matters preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
• 2-5 years of paralegal experience, preferably in an in-house legal department or law firm supporting corporate, commercial, insurance, litigation, employment, intellectual property, or regulatory matters.
• Prior internship or coursework related to safety, security, emergency management, or live event operations.
• Familiarity with DHS SAFETY Act program or similar certification/compliance frameworks.
• Knowledge of Cal-Osha regulations and compliance standards.
• Experience with incident reporting systems or risk assessment tools.
Physical Demands:
• Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, particularly during games and events.
• Ability to navigate stairs, ramps, and large stadium environments frequently.
