Reports to: Lead FCL S&C Coach
Classification: Full-Time/Exempt (Temp)
Summary/Objective:
The Houston Astros are seeking a Strength and Conditioning Apprentice to join the Sports Medicine & Performance Team. This position will work full-time in West Palm Beach, FL, and may travel occasionally. This individual must demonstrate high physical preparation acumen as well as strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team of practitioners.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to assisting full-time S&C Coaches with:
• Implement strength and conditioning programs using a science and data-led approach
• Effectively communicate player goals to individual athletes and stakeholders
• Establish and execute testing and exercise protocols pertaining to performance and rehabilitation
• Teach proper execution, techniques and safety for all lifts and movement drills
• Coach sprint, deceleration, and multidirectional movement mechanics
• Effectively communicate and collaborate with physical therapists, dietitians, athletic trainers, mental health & performance staff, coaches, and athletes
• Maintain gym and sports science equipment
• Consistently report player progress and regression to stakeholders
• Work with managers and player development staff to manage player load, maximize schedule efficiency, and optimize performance outcomes
ADDITIONAL responsibilities include:
• Actively participate in continuing education and professional growth opportunities
• Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings
• Must be flexible to work irregular hours, nights, and weekends with frequent travel
• Adhere to the organization's policies and procedures as outlined in the Astros Handbook, SM&P Handbook, Medical Department Handbook, and direct communication from the Director of Sports Medicine and Performance
• Other duties assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine and Performance
Education and/or Experience & Skills:
Required
• Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science or related field
• Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or similar international accreditation
• CPR/AED certified
• Fluency in Spanish is an asset but not required
Work Environment
This person is expected to be located in West Palm Beach, FL, during the season, Spring Training, and Extended Spring Training. It may also require participation in offseason camps. This position may require the ability to lift and carry up to 100lbs, the ability to stand for extended periods of time, as well as bending, reaching, and throwing. Visual acuity must be sufficient to facilitate instruction. This position will function both indoors and outdoors.
Physical Demands
• The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, jump, run, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and communicate with others
• The vision requirement includes the ability to review written and electronic materials in both digital and physical format
• The employee must be able to transfer and move items for departmental needs
• The employee must be able to adjust to changing work hours and locations as needed considering the strong focus on external communications and relationships
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Travel:
This position may require some travel during the in-season and throughout the offseason (limited).
