Hearst Magazines is seeking a talented, versatile Associate Art Director for its bookazine division to work on a variety of special-interest titles under key Hearst brands as well as partner brands. In the position, you will work in a fast-paced environment to create best in class designs. The candidate must have an exceptional creative vision, an ability to adapt content (whether new or preexisting) under parent brand and bookazine design guidelines, a keen eye for photography, excellent typography skills, and be an active team player. The candidate must be able to work effectively and efficiently while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
The Associate Art Director will design the entirety of their assigned publications (covers and interiors) and should have the ability to create both a compelling cover aimed at newsstand consumers and engaging, easy-to-navigate interior pages. The Art Director should also have the ability to explain any necessary color corrections and silhouettes to the imaging department/retouchers and communicate clearly with editors and other stakeholders.
What You'll Do:
• Lead the creative development of 20-30 special-interest publications per year
• Work with Project Editor to understand target audiences and media consumption behavior and trends and decide overall vision for each issue
• Collaborate with Photo Editor to select art for each publication
• Design covers in collaboration with Project Editor, group Editorial Directors; present and discuss covers with the team as well as the Group Creative Director and Publisher
• Deliver clean, production-ready files into Woodwing
• Envision new consistent branding for ''franchised'' projects (repeated themes that have performed well)
• Develop graphics and illustrations as needed or desired
• Create and maintain templates and styles for various recurring titles
• Understand the marketplace, assessing where Hearst brands stand against competitors' and ensure that we are ahead of the curve
• Stay up-to-date with industry trends, developments, and tools
