CNN Weather is seeking an experienced, digital-first weather journalist or meteorologist to help guide and manage the team's storytelling. The successful candidate has experience in the weather editorial space and thrives in the breakneck pace of extreme weather. The candidate also has strong news judgment, reporting and writing skills, along with a familiarity with digital video best practices. This person is a strong collaborator and leader who can work with meteorologists or highly specialized journalists, as well as breaking news reporters and correspondents around the world. They will help keep us sharp on daily priorities while also searching for and finding new ways to tell weather stories. This person will also help make connections for audiences that illuminate and personalize the climate crisis. Finally, this person must embody the broader CNN Climate & Weather team's ethos - we are looking for a self-motivated, team-oriented collaborator who takes pride in their work, values diversity and elevates their colleagues.
Your Role Accountabilities…
• Help identify and execute a coverage plan around the weather story of the day, whether it's a hurricane making landfall, an expansion of the drought in the West or a new visual that will fascinate the CNN audience
• Serve as point of contact for the CNN Weather team at times, with no supervision
• Must be able to handle complex reporting and editing, as well as alerting that news to the broader CNN network
• Work with the team assign and edit stories in the breaking news space, including urgent, rapidly updating digital coverage of extreme weather
• Write and edit in formats that go beyond the traditional article, including short format storytelling, visualizations, video scripts, social media posts
• Develop and execute distinctive story ideas and angles around complex topics
• You'll work with the photo editors, video producers and designers to help our audiences understand the impact of extreme weather and climate change
• Last but never least: Editors are often the final eyes on a story or video before it gets distributed to millions of people worldwide; all editors work intently to make sure our stories are accurate and fair so that we continue to grow the trust between CNN and our audience.
Qualifications & Experience…
• At least 8 years of digital editorial experience in extreme weather or climate, with a degree in meteorology, climate science or a related field preferred (but not required)
• Ability to maintain a reasonably flexible schedule depending on major weather events
• Experience handling complex news or topics without supervision
• A passion for weather, climate and science and a deep knowledge of US weather
• A proven track record of writing and editing fast-moving breaking news; excellent weather and climate news judgment
• Compelling pitching and headline instincts that help our audience connect with the news
• Experience helping reporters, producers and meteorologists frame their stories for a national audience
• Some experience with weather data and visualizations
• Perfect grasp of written and spoken English
• Exceptional communication and organizational skills
• A college degree or equivalent
