Overview and Responsibilities:
CBS Detroit (WWJ-TV) and Detroit50 (WKBD-TV) is seeking an Executive News Producer to join our growing News Team! The ideal candidate must have clear vision of how to build a dynamic multi-platform newscast and communicate that vision to the team. This includes story development, script approvals, graphics, animation, and pre-production from inception of story to multi-platform delivery. We seeking an individual who can contribute an impactful and creative voice during editorial meetings, presenting significant, original, and engaging story pitches. This person must advocate effectively for content across on-air, digital, and streaming platforms.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Review and approve scripts and rundowns to ensure journalistic accuracy and uphold station mission.
• Conduct daily reviews of news products before and after airing to ensure high standards of impactful journalism, quality, accuracy, and execution.
• Ensure comprehensive coverage of important topics.
• Assist in evaluating, leading, and mentoring staff to promote peak performance and efficiency.
• Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and team-oriented culture.
• Communicate and implement a creative vision for simulcasts and stream-only shows, driving compelling and engaging storytelling.
• Make crucial editorial decisions and streamline communication across the newsroom.
• Manage staff to maintain high editorial and production standards.
• Create opportunities for staff development and growth in a creative, team-oriented environment.
• Demonstrate strong team-building skills and collaborate effectively with producers and the newsroom.
• Assist reporting staff in generating and pitching enterprise story ideas aligned with current news topics and issues.
• Stay updated on the day's news cycle, exchange ideas with newsroom management and colleagues, and collaborate with anchors, producers, and MSJs on story direction and production.
• Aggressively pursue breaking news using adequate resources and streamline communication with the newsroom, streaming, and digital teams.
• Collaborate with streaming and digital teams to optimize daily content opportunities on all platforms.
Basic Qualifications:
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Superior news judgment and writing skills.
• Proficiency in non-linear editing.
• Knowledge of current events.
• Driven by results, innovative and demonstrate leadership and collaboration.
• Regularly demonstrates capabilities of a successful, people-first manager who champions constructive, impactful feedback.
• Strong breaking news skills and proven track record of thriving in a fast-paced newsroom.
• Ability to incorporate social media and new technology into all the newscasts.
Additional Qualifications:
• Proven experience as a news manager preferred, with at least three of those years in a medium or large market.
• Bachelor's or technical degree in Broadcast Journalism, Communications, or allied filed preferred.
