Looking to launch your journalism career? Detroit’s only all-news radio station, WWJ Newsradio 950, has recently transformed its digital news operations and is seeking talented digital journalists with strong news judgment and news-gathering skills, and a passion for local news. This team is working to grow our audience across all platforms, from the mobile web to social media to smart speakers. This is an opportunity to join an award-winning news operation that has built a large loyal listening audience over many years and is now extending its reach by creating and distributing an array of digital content.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
• Develop story ideas, research and write news articles
• Respond to breaking news and actively monitor sources of breaking news (Social media, AP, internal communications, broadcast etc.)
• Collaborate with broadcast staff to advance and tailor stories and for digital
• Publish articles, audio stories, podcasts and short videos on all digital platforms
• Write and edit headlines and text to position content for maximum engagement on the website, apps, and social media
• Ensure all articles comply with AP style and are SEO-friendly
• Ensure stories have appropriate elements (photo, audio, video)
• Post to social media accounts, compose push notifications and newsletters
• Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications/Requirements:
• Outstanding news judgment, and strong reporting, writing and editing skills
• Ability to work under deadline pressure independently or in a team environment
• Experience with content management/online publishing systems
• Command of best practices on all social media platforms
• Knowledge of the political and cultural landscapes of the Metro Detroit area
• Availability on weekends, holidays and/or evenings will be required
• A valid driver’s license, satisfactory completion of a motor vehicle record check, and, if the position requires use of applicant’s own vehicle, proof of insurance, is required
• Bachelor’s degree preferred

• Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments while under deadline pressure

• Willingness to experiment and innovate
• Candidates should submit writing samples and will be asked to take a writing test.
Schedule/hours:
• Two days, 16 hours per week
• Additional days/hours on a fill-in basis.
