Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Manager of Communications is a part of the team responsible for all baseball related communications and media relations. This position will assist in all facets of the baseball communications operation to promote the team, front office, coaches and players through effective communications strategies and positive media relations. This position requires a strategic communications mindset, foresight to prepare for upcoming communications opportunities and challenges and a demonstrated ability to build strong relations with both local and national media.
The Nationals are a military-friendly organization actively recruiting veterans and spouses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Serve as one of two points of contact for season and daily credential requests
• Assist in the production of daily game information materials
• Assist in the writing, editing and production of the annual media guide
• Along with the Senior Vice President and Director, provide strategic media and interview guidance to players, coaches, and other baseball operations staff
• Along with the Senior Vice President and Director, develop key baseball related message points to help support the organization's goals
• Research, develop and pitch story topics to local and national media
• Anticipate potential storylines – both positive and negative – from both inside and outside of baseball
• Serve as the communications representative on approximately 50% of the road games in each respective season
• Travel to West Palm Beach, FL for Spring Training
• Manage and supervise interns
• Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent military experience
• At least two years of full-time experience in the communications department of a Major League Baseball team with an emphasis on baseball communications and travel experience
• Extensive knowledge and demonstrated use of Adobe's InDesign, Photoshop and other desktop publishing software to produce game information materials and media guides
• Extensive knowledge and demonstrated use of baseball research tools such as the MLB Research Tool, StatsPass.com, Baseball-Reference.com, FanGraphs.com, the Elias Sports Bureau, etc.
• Advanced knowledge of the game of baseball, statistics and the current media landscape
• Basic knowledge of Major League Baseball's credential and guest pass systems
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions
• Strong verbal and written communication skills – ability to communicate with staff and prepare written reports.
• Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to direct the work activities of several associates simultaneously and plan ahead.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in fast-paced environment.
• Candidate must have the ability to travel for the entirety of Major League Baseball Spring Training and at least 50% of the travel during the regular season

Physical/Environmental Requirements
• Office: Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Position may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
• Gameday: Job requires employee to function in a high activity and heavily crowded outdoor professional sports venue. May work at heights. Employee will be exposed to inclement weather of varying degrees. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/down stairs. The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.
