The Job
The Senior Editor is responsible for generating story ideas and requires someone who can quickly generate thoughtful news coverage plans based on the news, brainstorm segments and features as well as propose complementary elements that will drive traffic to and from our reporting. This person must show proven ability to project story trends, shape the next-day vision and create a daily coverage plan full of compelling, visual stories. This individual would work directly with the Director of Planning and the other members of planning team, as well as the planning desks around the world.
The Daily
• Story Idea Generation & Planning: Must have superior news judgment coupled with the ability to anticipate the ebb and flow of news to ensure a steady stream of story ideas. Thinks beyond the headlines to generate distinctive coverage for the bureau and the network. Understands and uses the latest in social media tools for story generation and development. Responsible for projecting and determining cost information for coverage as well as facilitating clear guidance and feedback to the field (Correspondents, Field Producers, Technical Crews).
• Mentorship: Will mentor junior planning editors to ensure coverage plans are well defined and details are outlined in documented fashion (via INews or email), including correspondents-to-be-assigned, planned packages, and anticipated live coverage.
• Editorial and Logistical Planning of Future Events: This person works with the Director of Planning on editorial and logistical planning for future events, working closely with regions and beats, shows and digital to balance expectations and fulfill platform needs. This person should also be able to creatively solve logistical problems and technical issues.
• Coverage planning in the aftermath of breaking news: Responding quickly to priorities to coordinate coverage desires to meet newsgathering needs, both live and in package form for all CNN platforms.
• Ensuring coverage plans are well defined and communicated: Detailed coverage notes are essential to the success of the person in this position. Communicating to teams internally and to the bureaus with daily coverage notes, updated planning and troop movements for future stories are critical. Working closely with News Operations, bureaus and beats, producers, and correspondents to assign future stories and travel are key. Communication throughout the day is also crucial to ensure a robust team coverage approach to many stories for all CNN platforms.
• Providing full support regarding essential coordination and logistical planning decisions in line with the coverage and programming priorities, as well as, ensuring coverage planning operates within budget constraints. Awareness of field safety issues and the wellbeing of the teams on assignment are a vital part of the PE responsibilities. Full knowledge of company policies and practices.
The Essentials
• 10+ years' experience professional experience in TV news
• 4-year College Degree, preferably in Communications, politics or related fields is preferable
• Prefer demonstrated understanding of how to translate politics and DC based news into compelling television.
