Section Editor, CNN Digital
WarnerMedia is a leading media and entertainment company that creates and distributes premium and popular content from a diverse array of talented storytellers and journalists to global audiences through its consumer brands including: HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros., TNT, TBS, truTV, CNN, DC Entertainment, New Line, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Turner Classic Movies and others.
The Job
Climate is a story that touches all of CNN's audiences and all of our journalistic beats: international and national news, politics, business, health and wellness, travel, science and beyond.
This section editor is the center of gravity for climate coverage across CNN's digital platforms and topic areas, and a coordinating point for the entire network. The editor will partner with our climate beat leader in newsgathering to break news and cover the stories and conversations about one of the most important issues of our time.
Together, these leaders will work across all of digital and with domestic and international newsgathering teams to prioritize and coordinate CNN's climate coverage in a manner that emphasizes the best of CNN's DNA: Urgency. Essential, global ''Go There'' reporting. Facts backed by data and science. Journalism that holds power to account. Stories that connect dots and explain consequences.
The Daily
The section editor will work daily to communicate assignments across all of CNN, including those coming from writers, reporters, producers and correspondents across digital, national and international teams. The coordinating and planning aspect of this role is key, both to communicate out CNN's daily body of work on all aspects of climate internally, AND to ensure that the network is informed and across major stories and upcoming events.
You will spearhead a team comprised of a general assignment writer, a Washington reporter, an international editor, and a data visuals editor. You will drive, assign, prioritize and edit work from this team, including daily stories, long-term and evergreen projects, and possible newsletters or podcasts or other initiatives to come. Top-notch editing skills and the ability to lift and shape storytelling will be essential for the role.
The rhythm of your days will vary. Some will be fast-paced and require juggling multiple breaking stories with first versions, reflows and alerts while also assigning analysis and follow-up angles. Other days may center on working through the edits on a deep-dive piece of enterprise, helping the story to shine and working across the organization with newsgathering, video, visuals, programming and social teams to cover every aspect of storytelling in both the production and distribution of our content. On all days, our commitment to clear and accurate storytelling remains our top priority.
You should have experience working the climate beat and a vision for coverage that will elevate this critical beat in a way that engages audiences. We are looking for a knowledgeable editor of both stories and pitches, who has a proven track record of successful collaboration in a matrixed organization.
