Royalty Analyst- ATL Group, Publishing Royalties & Administration
Department Description:
• The U.S. Recorded Music Rights Administration Division (“RMRA”) consists of four main departments: Artist Royalties & Administration, Licensing & Rights Administration, Publishing Royalties & Administration, and Legal Affairs.
• The Publishing Royalties & Administration Department consists of three main groups: the Atlantic Group, the Warner Bros. Group, and the Rhino/Catalog Group. Collectively, these groups are responsible for the following:
• securing from music publishers any and all rights required in order for WMG’s U.S. record labels to exploit any musical compositions embodied in the sound recordings and records that those record labels release,
• negotiating the corresponding mechanical and other licenses covering those musical composition rights, and
• paying those music publishers the corresponding mechanical and other license advances, fees, and/or royalties in an accurate and timely manner.
• The Atlantic Group works specifically with the Business Affairs, Finance, Production, Operations, New Media, and Marketing Departments (among others) of Atlantic Records and its affiliated labels to fulfill the above-referenced responsibilities with respect to each of the recordings and records that Atlantic and its affiliated labels releases.
High Level Job Description: The candidate hired to fill this position will be responsible for entering and maintaining mechanical and/or royalty rates in the various publishing royalty systems that WMG utilizes and processing publishing royalty statements for Atlantic Records.
Detailed Job Description/ Responsibilities:
• Obtain all necessary contractual, publisher and administration information required to set up mechanical and other publishing royalty rates in WMG’s various royalty system(s) in order for WMG to pay mechanical and other publishing royalties in respect of the musical compositions embodied in WMG’s recordings and records, including audio and/or audiovisual recordings, and physical and digital records.;
• Perform and review royalty rate calculations; reference and review the underlying license agreements and/or relevant contractual provisions, as needed, in order to confirm and/or determine such royalty rates and the corresponding royalty payees before that information is entered into the applicable royalty system(s);
• Perform and review adjustments to royalty rate calculations and set-up as needed;
• Ensure that releases and projects are set-up accurately and submitted to the relevant approvers for review in a timely manner; ensure that any corrections required to be made to the set-up for a given release or project are made accurately and submitted in a timely manner;
• Maintain and update royalty account information for assigned vendors, including by updating the contact information and tax identification numbers for vendors as needed;
• Process and review quarterly and monthly publishing royalty statements to ensure the accuracy of both the royalty rates applied and the underlying earnings on which royalties are being paid;
• Respond to inquiries from publishers regarding the statements and payments WMG has sent; and
• Perform other duties and tasks related to the Department’s role and responsibilities as needed.
Required Competencies/Skills:
• Candidates for this position must be able to work well independently and as part of a team;
• Candidates must have strong computer skills, including strong data entry skills (with an emphasis on accuracy) and strong proficiency using Microsoft Office’s Excel, Word and PowerPoint applications; familiarity with Microsoft Office’s Access application is preferred, but not required.
• Candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Candidate must possess excellent analytical, mathematical and organizational skills; and
• Candidate must be able to meet deadlines consistently and effectively while working under pressure; candidate must be able to manage multiple assignments at any given time and prioritize them effectively and appropriately.
Special Requirements/Preferences:
• Candidate should possess a minimum of 0-2 years’ experience working in a position or positions involving the administration of mechanical/other publishing royalties or record royalties, or have other comparable music industry experience.
• Working knowledge of WMG’s EROS royalty system and/or one or more of the legacy royalty systems currently used by WMG’s major U.S. labels (e.g., HP, AS400, ROYALT) is preferred, but not required, provided that if candidate does not possess knowledge of any of those WMG systems, candidate should possess a working knowledge of at least one non-WMG, music industry royalty system; and
• Candidates should be able to work overtime as needed; similarly, candidates should be prepared to schedule vacation days at times that will not conflict with internal deadlines, so that their absences will not interfere with their ability to meet such deadlines.
Education Required/Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree required.
