The Job
The HBO Max/HBO Content Research team is looking for a Director of Content Research. Based in Los Angeles, the Director will partner and collaborate with multiple teams throughout the organization, including content strategy, content development, programming, data science and audience data (among other teams). In particular, this role will partner closely with content strategy and content development teams on a variety of projects. This role requires an individual with exceptional relationship skills. We're looking for someone that thrives in a collaborative environment and respects, values & understands the content creation business. This role will work across multiple key content genres (unscripted, international, comedy, adult animation, drama, movies). We're looking for an experienced research professional who has direct ongoing experience partnering with content strategy executives and various types of content creators (creative executives, showrunners, executive producers, studio/production creatives). We're looking for someone that is stakeholder/client focused, an exceptionally strong team player and relationship focused (establishing, building, maintaining) across multiple internal and external teams. The Director, Content Research will report to the Vice President, Content Research.
The Daily
• Passionately advocate for HBO Max/HBO content development & content strategy teams and their respective initiatives/priorities
• Establish, build and maintain trusted relationships with key stakeholders/business partners across content strategy, content development, data science, marketing, product, and editorial teams (among many other teams)
• Partner with content strategy team on a variety of projects across content acquisitions, content scheduling and content windowing strategies (binge, weekly, hybrid, etc)
• Partner with content development teams on pilot testing, episode testing, content optimization, end of season post mortems, greenlight insights, renewal assessments and multiple other projects
• Direct/oversee content testing for HBO Max/HBO programming across multiple genres (unscripted, international, family/live action, comedy, drama)
• Partner with VP, Content Research to establish/maintain/refine 360 insights framework for all HBO Max programming (content optimization audience consumption)
• Partner with VP, Content Research on various special projects/studies for content strategy & content development teams (among other teams)
• Work with VP, Content Research to assess and enhance all HBO Max content research reports/deck/presentation output (ensuring all presentations/decks are in the most digestible format possible for our key content strategy & content development stakeholders)
• Routinely assess shifting & evolving viewer behavior/trends and the impact to HBO Max/HBO and our competitors
• Regularly assess current/upcoming competitive landscape and proactively recommend opportunities to HBO Max content strategy and content development teams
• Responsible for leading/shaping/commissioning various landscape studies across multiple genres (unscripted, family/live action, international, streaming animated)
• Evaluate reboot & format viability for HBO Max content development teams
• Partner with data science teams to implement various digestible HBO Max consumption dashboards for content development/programming teams (international, unscripted, family/live action, drama, comedy)
• Regularly collaborate/partner with various internal research teams throughout the organization (audience data, TNets, WB Studio, distribution, theatrical, kids/young adult)
• Establish and build relationships with LATAM research teams and proactively identify opportunities to partner with the HBO Max Content Research team
• Train HBO Max Content Research team on Nielsen linear/streaming software (NPower, Nielsen SVOD Content Ratings, etc) and key Nielsen metrics (duplication, segmentation, marketbreaks, co-viewing), identifying ways to naturally incorporate into various HBO Max 360 content insight decks/presentations; will also share Nielsen methodology enhancements with the team as needed
• Maximize the use of first party & Nielsen data (and other relevant data as applicable) to tell a cohesive 360 full story of HBO Max content performance
• Directly manage a content analyst and lead/direct projects across HBO Max Content Research team
• Mentor, guide and help manage workload of HBO Max Content Research team
The Essentials
• 10 years of research experience at a streaming platform, studio/production company, broadcast network or cable network is required
• 10 years partnering directly with content strategy/scheduling teams/executives is required
• 10 years partnering directly with content creators (creative executives, showrunners, executive producers) is required
• 8 years of experience recruiting, building and managing a research team is required
• A college graduate with a 4-year degree is required
• Demonstrated extensive knowledge of the content creation business is required
• Experience and comfort regularly communicating and partnering with content strategy and content development executives/teams is required
• Proven anticipator of stakeholder needs is required
• Calm and reasonable temperament is required
• Ability to be an active listener to stakeholders/business partners is required
• Demonstrated operational knowledge of Nielsen software is required (NPower)
• Direct experience overseeing/managing research panels is valued
• Skilled storyteller with strong ability to drill complex and disparate data sets into compelling (yet simple) insights is required
• Direct experience authoring/leading content strategy studies (binge vs weekly, valuation analysis, scheduling optimization, windowing insights) is required
• Strong knowledge of U.S. programming landscape (streaming, cable, broadcast) is required
• International content experience is valued
• Exceptional communication skills (presenting/verbal, written, listening) are required
• Positive attitude and demeanor are required
• Knowledge of streaming research software is helpful (comScore, Omniture)
• Exceptional organizational, prioritization and time management skills are required
• Extremely detail oriented with a strong focus on accuracy is required
• Operational knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint is required (including building presentations from scratch)
