Job Summary:
Leads all aspects of the Music Business Affairs & Legal function as well as the Music Clearance function. The music business affairs function identifies, negotiates for, acquires, and develops entertainment content, production, and post production arrangements. Negotiates high profile complex agreements relating to development, production, distribution, talent, content, rights, and services which often requires negotiation and documentation with senior management at record labels and music publishers for picture and soundtrack record rights to top talent. Manages business and legal affairs activities that drive deals or deals under negotiation. Negotiates major production and talent deals and ensures support after close. Serves as a key resource on major deals. Engages in complex negotiation deals on soundtrack records. May include drafting legal agreements, overseeing all music legal aspects, and providing production executives advice on legal issues relating to development and production, including guild issues. Responsible for use of all original and licensed music in marketing. Oversees all music rights for catalog titles and acquisition of additional music rights for catalog titles and the marketing of catalog titles. Advises management on key business issues concerning rights, obligations and privileges of the organization including any copyright and infringement claims. Supervises and administers a team of 25 which is expected to grow to 34 in the next year.
Responsibilities:
SCOPE: Accountable for the management of a major strategically important function. The top position with full accountability for the function.
ROLE IN STRATEGY / PLANNING: Formulates strategies for the function. Sets, approves and adjusts major policies and operating procedures. Develops long-range plans. Obtains and allocates resources to achieve strategic and operating goals.
NEGOTIATIONS / INTERACTIONS: Interacts and negotiates with Studio executive management to adjust plans and strategies. Interacts with critical decision makers to convince and influence business decisions. Builds and enhances vital, top level internal and external relationships.
ASSIGNMENT OF WORK: Directs executives accountable for achieving major outcomes for the function. Ensures that direct reports have appropriate resources to achieve defined objectives.
OVERSIGHT RECEIVED: Work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective against the function's goals which requires the ability to maintain precedent while being flexible to adjust on a project to project basis.
Basic Qualifications:
• 15 years' increasingly responsible roles in Music Business & Legal Affairs with significant hands on experience with various content, preferably with a major studio, mini-studio, or streaming service.
• Proven leader in setting direction for, and achieving objectives of, a strategically important function.
• Ability to operate independently of while influencing stakeholders/partners and building effective partnerships
• Demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels
• Demonstrated ability to concisely convey complex issues and offer recommendations
• Proven good judgement and effective deal-making
Required Education
J.D. degree; strong academic credentials
Membership in the California State Bar Association (or willingness and qualification to be registered In-House Counsel) required
