Job Summary:
Oversees and coordinates all back-end production/design work for Nat Geo Books. Liaises with vendors, production managers, managing editor to coordinate assignments and release all files to ensure compliance with vendor requirements. Maintain library of approved covers and final printer archives of interiors. Reports to the Director, Creative.
Responsibilities:
• Work with the Creative Director to direct, assign, coordinate, execute, and review all back-end production/design assignments for the division. Assignments may include preflighting of all release files; style chapter reviews and master template building; flowing of copyedited manuscripts; placing of linking low resolution images; readying of final release files; uploading files to the softproofing management systems; reviewing and correcting digital blue lines; reviewing files for quality and trouble-shooting issues; creating and maintaining style and design guides for the division, and dispensing these to the freelance designers as necessary.
• Mentor, manage, and oversee the schedule of freelance designers/production artists to best achieve file delivery on time and to the highest level of quality. Hire, write contracts, and supervise freelance design production specialists as necessary on a project-by-project basis. Communicate Nat Geo Books prepress standards to freelance designers and art directors, transfer files, build style templates, preflight, correct, and release all files to various prepress vendors and printers.
• Direct the liaising between Production Services and Art/Photo departments. Direct all SPM-related communication, including the downloading and uploading of release files, images, templates, the notification of in-house and freelance designers and photo editors of file transfers and availability, troubleshooting problems or missing items for vendors, etc.
• Oversee the maintenance of a library of latest, approved covers on the server until final printer versions are available to the Marketing Group. Direct and oversee the various requests for cover or interior layouts for Marketing, Communications, Sales, etc.
• Step in as back-up support to Nat Geo Books design team as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
• 5-8 years working experience as a high-level production artist in a book-publishing environment; background in prepress or with a printer preferred.
• Ability to work with printer templates in a variety of different measurements (metric, picas, inches, decimal inches) and convert back and forth; ability to extrapolate word counts and apply them to page castoffs.
• Knowledge of digital file quality and specifications needed for publication. In-depth knowledge of color correction process, pre-press technology and 4-color printing knowledge required. Troubleshooting ability and managerial experience a plus.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Highly organized and schedule oriented.
• Exceptional portfolio showing design capability and design program depth, focused on InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Required Education
• Bachelor's preferably in Graphic Design
