As the departmental 'home-base' for technical talent, the Crew Managers actively partner with Technology leadership, Studio Department Leaders, Production Management, HR, Talent Development, and fellow Crew & Artist Managers to enhance all aspects of collective craft and individual career development within Production Technology. They create a safe and nurturing environment for excellence and growth for our technical staff and apply their understanding of technical capabilities, production needs, and workflows to ensure the optimal assignment of available technology resources toward priorities and projects.
Crewing and staffing:
• Oversee and ensure the strategic and timely casting of all projects within Production Technology
• Work with the project management team, technology managers and developers to analyze the consolidated schedules for each group/project and individual
• Help resolve allocation conflicts when resource or time constraints necessitate
• Oversee the developer transitions, ensuring smooth and timely information flow
• Partner with HR and Director Of Production Technology to define and execute talent strategy
Departmental identity & Culture:
• Develop an intimate knowledge of the department, the responsibilities, development needs, and individual players and act as a catalyst to help remove barriers to employee development
• Accountable for the collection, vetting, and delegation of common ideas, issues, and inspirations
• Maintain close relationships with the crew and manage individual employee issues or orient the individuals to the appropriate support departments
• Inspire the department to build cross-departmental relationships and collaborations and inspire new, creative ways to collaborate within the studio.
• Support and encourage positive morale and engagement throughout the department
• Mentor and guide Production Technology Leads and managers, develop programs and inspire ideas to strengthen their leadership
Individual and career development:
• Partner with the Training team to ensure that opportunities to advance the skills of our crew are being maximized through the development of training and development plans
• Manage the career growth of team members, helping to find them new opportunities and castings that align with their career ambitions and keep them engaged and challenged
• Support, formalize, and encourage ongoing crew assessments and help create effective feedback mechanisms and development plans
• Partner with the recruitment department to manage the candidate review and feedback process
• Partner with Production Technology Leads and managers to develop the program that identifies criteria, evaluates individual performance and delivers feedback to individuals
• Provide feedback directly to individuals on the team to help improve their performance, and encourage good behaviors and practices
• Identify individual or collective development needs, training plans and leadership potential to support career planning and progression
Recruiting & Internships:
• Oversee Prod Tech engagement with Talent Acquisition and review interview panel as needed
• Develop on boarding strategy for department
• Oversee the Technology Internship program, including organizing project ideas and engagement with campus recruitment
• Partner with recruitment and talent development team to create meaningful projects & programs for the interns hired into the studio
• As an active member of the Tech Outreach working group, partner with Recruitment and Outreach to cultivate and coordinate relationships with external partners in industry and academia to improve pipeline of incoming talent
Knowledge, skills and experience:
• Exceptional interpersonal, listening, and communication skills
• The ability to effectively communicate, interact, and partner with technology management, production management, creative talent, and studio management
• Previous experience managing or developing people in a technical environment such as an engineering organization, or with a software development process, would be highly beneficial
• Knowledge of the animation production process, workflows, and familiarity with production environments is a plus
• Strong skills in the area of time management and organization
• The ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic/ever-changing environment is required
