WHO YOU ARE
Channel 5’s Content Legal department has an exciting new vacancy for an additional legal advisor to join and add to its team, working primarily on Channel 5’s content. Ideally you will be a lawyer with a considerable amount of in-house experience of legal/regulatory compliance issues as they relate to broadcast programmes or you are currently working in a law firm, have a media law background and want to move in-house and watch TV for a living with us.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
Advising on Channel 5’s programmes before and after broadcast / publication, working with producers and commissioning editors throughout the commissioning and production process on regulatory compliance, in particular in relation to Ofcom Broadcasting Code matters.
Your work will include liaising with producers and commissioning editors to advise on and put in place appropriate programme protocols to aid the production process and ensure compliance with the law and Ofcom Broadcasting Code.
You will also advise on reputational and legal issues arising from programming work as and when they arise, including robustly but sensitively defending our content (including drafting Ofcom responses or dealing with litigation) when appropriate. You will also look after related press, viewer enquiries, online and associated content and work with other teams across the business to support the successful broadcast and defence of our programmes.
YOU WILL HAVE
Successful candidate will ideally have an established understanding and experience of the issues and challenges of producing and broadcasting legally compliant programmes, liaising with different departments and key stakeholders within production companies and broadcasters. Or you have an experienced media law background, are a quick learner, have a passion for what we do so and want to adapt your experience to TV. A collaborative and positive outlook to getting our award-winning content to air is essential – as is knowing when to refer up and ask questions. A willingness to learn and to apply new learnings to a real practical scenario, in an intelligent manner, is a must.
YOU WILL BE
A people person who is a good listener and above all a team player. You are supportive and have an instinctive appreciation of how to manage any given situation (including regulatory issues like the Ofcom Code) calmly and in an empathetic way. You also have the knowledge to back that up and the confidence to challenge thinking / perceived wisdom where appropriate, asking the right questions before applying the law/Ofcom Code in a practical and analytical way. Attention to detail is crucial, as well as an ability to prioritise and manage strict deadlines and support the team around you.
Communication of complex legal and regulatory issues in a straightforward and succinct will be very important as well as having very good judgement, and an ability to recognise when an issue is appropriate for discussing and escalating to your manager. You also understand the remit of Channel 5 and Viacom and have a passion for our programming and what we’re trying to achieve.
NICE TO HAVES
An approachable, professional persona and ability to collaborate easily in a friendly and lively environment. Fun to have around.
