Intern, Baseball Systems and Analytics
Background: This Baseball Systems & Analytics position will support a range of USA Baseball player identification and development programs and initiatives. USA Baseball's National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. is equipped with the latest Trackman V3 radar and data collection capabilities. The Trackman radar system allows USA Baseball to enhance its evaluation and selection processes as well as assist in player development and training by adding in individual pitch and hit tracking data. In addition to TrackMan, USA Baseball utilizes a range of technologies to measure players' athletic performance, bullpen and batting practice metrics, and cognitive speed of processing. This internship position will work with both large and small datasets to identify trends, support player identification and selection processes, and develop tools to enhance USA Baseball's implementation and understanding of athlete performance data.

Position Details:
• Full-time hours (40 hours/week).
• Limited domestic travel involved.
Responsibilities:
• Aggregate, organize and analyze athlete performance data collected at various USA Baseball events to support and enhance USA Baseball's sport performance and analytics efforts.
• Query databases and applications to extract data from systems.
• Create reports and dashboards to measure data error and accuracy.
• Serve as a resource for USA Baseball Program Directors, Scouts and National Team Coaches for athlete performance data.
• Process USA Baseball's automated reports in R Studio for various on-site and off-site events alongside a supervisor. Troubleshoot report issues as necessary.
• Perform various administrative duties related to TrackMan system & data processing, including
roster creation, data cleaning, and data storage.
• Analyze TrackMan and other data for analytical player evaluation & development insights.
• Manage the implementation of various technologies across all National Teams and events and oversee the associated data collection and analysis working in collaboration with the Technology Department.
• Process high speed video captured on select athletes to share with USA Baseball program directors and coaches.
• Utilize the Synergy Sports Baseball App and Video Editor to organize, aggregate, and share video clips for use by USA Baseball coaches and players.
• Suggest and implement improved functionality & new ideas for reports and analytical insights.
• Perform ad-hoc analyses of gathered data as needed.
• Attend various games and events to operate TrackMan as directed by Director, Baseball Operations or Senior Director, Technology.
• Assist in the implementation and development of new systems designed to present, share, and analyze athlete performance data.
• Identify areas of future growth for the program, including use of emerging technologies, strategies for improved data management & analysis and collaboration with other USA Baseball initiatives.
• Operate additional baseball performance technologies including, but not limited to, Rapsodo Hitting and Pitching systems.
Qualifications:
• Experience within baseball, and a passion for the sport and its different elements.
• Interest in sports science, data analytics, player development and long-term player safety initiatives.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills and the ability to organize, interpret and process many different data sets into a streamlined process.
• Proficiency and previous experience with coding languages such as R, SQL, and Python.
• Strong quantitative analysis & computing skills with a background in Computer Science, Statistics, or related background.
• High level literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive Suite.
• Positive attitude and ability work well in a fast paced, team setting.
• Willingness to work with a diverse set of athletes and staff members.
• Good time management and communication skills.
• Ability to relocate to the Durham/Cary, North Carolina area for the duration of the internship.
• A completion of a successful background check is required prior to employment .
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience supporting a team or coaching staff within a data analytics team or department.
• Experience working with Amazon Web Services cloud database systems.
• Experience building dashboards and/or data visualizations in R Shiny.
• Experience processing, editing, and sharing high speed video clips.
• Ability to utilize existing and emerging technologies within the game to achieve team goals.
• Previous experience with Rapsodo, Diamond Kinetics, Trackman, or other emerging baseball technologies.
Required Education:
• Candidates should possess or be working towards a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Communications, Technology or other relevant degree.
