Universal Pictures Content Group is a global productions and acquisitions business that acquires, co-produces, co-finances and distributes films, documentaries, television programs and short form content across a wide variety of genres including drama, comedy, kids, animation, music, sports and fitness for worldwide distribution across all media. Headquartered in London with offices in Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo and Sydney, the team is recognised as the market leader and has ambitious plans for further growth.
This role requires a resourceful and pro-active VP, contributing their legal expertise and commercial awareness to ensure the best interests of NBCUniversal are maintained at all times. The role will report into the SVP, Business & Legal Affairs.
Management experience is essential as the role will be responsible for at least two direct reports and will work closely with other team members at all levels.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Leading the structuring, negotiating and drafting of acquisitions, pre-buys (including when Universal is funding into production), co-production, co-financing and commissioning agreements
• Negotiation of NOAs, IPAs, security agreements, bond related documentation and other agreements related to financing/production
• Familiarity with “soft money†incentive arrangements across different genres, rights and territories
• Independently negotiating and drafting agreements in the development / pre-production space, such as with writers, authors, development producers, directors, producers and composers, plus first look and talent agreements
• Providing support for in-house production projects, including concluding above-the-line, crew, location and production services agreements
• Understanding issues relating to rights clearance, Chain of Title, IP infringement
• Familiarity with Production Health & Safety (including Covid-19), Respect in the Workplace and Compliance issues
• Devising and implementing optimal negotiation strategy and deal structures as required
• Liaising internally with teams across NBCUniversal including Legal, Production, Tax, Operations, Finance and Royalties
• Driving enhancement of own and others' awareness of commercial and legal developments
• To drive development of best practice / working smarter / know how in the development, finance and production team, working closely with the existing VP and SVP Business & Legal Affairs
Qualifications
/Requirements
• A lawyer qualified in the UK or another common law jurisdiction, with significant post-qualification experience, including both first class in-house and private practice experience
• Expertise within the media industry and a strong background in development, production and financing, copyright/IP law, with capability of advising on a wide range of legal matters including contract, commercial, litigation and company law
• Comfortable managing a dynamic and varied workload, often to tight timelines
• An ability to interact with a range of personalities and styles and be able to establish effective relationships at all levels
• Experience of managing multiple reports with a keen interest in people management and mentoring
• A problem-solving, multi-disciplinary approach, joining the dots and exercising sound judgment
• Concise and persuasive verbal and written communication skills and excellent negotiation skills
• Emotional intelligence and professionalism and maintain composure under pressure in a fast-paced, changing environment
• Willing to take an "unpopular" position if it is the appropriate and correct action for the business to pursue
• An in depth understanding of risk-based approaches to drafting and problem solving (ie the ability to balance the use of tried and tested solutions with the need for creative alternatives)
• Ability to translate deal terms and legal issues into layman's terms for non-legal colleagues
• A productive and approachable team player with a desire to feed in to the improvement of the team's systems, templates and processes
