News Desk Assistant (NEWS experience required)
TMZ is searching for a News Desk Assistant. This is a freelance position that has growth potential and may lead to a staff position. We are seeking applicants with NEWS experience (internships, local station, etc.) with an interest in reporting and breaking news stories. On a daily basis, you must be able to pitch and identify news stories that fit within our brand.
The News Desk Assistant has solid editorial news judgment and investigative reporting skills. We are seeking applicants with a passion for news and research. The ability to forge solid relationships is a key skill-set to have for success in this position. The ideal candidate has a journalism background (network news, local station and/or university news experience is a plus). Must have a flexible schedule and the ability to work various shifts and weekends when necessary.
The ideal candidate must have the following experience:
- Ability to navigate through entertainment news, analyze content and recognize big stories
- Keep your finger on the pulse of trending news, both locally and nationally
- Provide original news angles and manage processes to follow those stories as they progress
- Familiar with programs and processes such as iNews, PACER, Outlook, and Word Processing
- Proficient in logging and transcribing video
- Knowledge of social media and ability to use various platforms
- Basic knowledge of telephone etiquette, including how to call law enforcement agencies, law offices, district attorneys, and other official institutions which may aide in the fact gathering process
- Basic knowledge of court proceedings, criminal and civil, and ability to navigate through local court processes to obtain documents and information
- Other duties as assigned
