The Specialist, Rights and Clearance is responsible for providing support to production units, distribution initiatives and ad hoc projects, from initial research to completion. To expand the use of new and archival content, the Specialist, Rights and Clearances analyzes and processes third-party licenses to ensure the inclusion of appropriate language and applicable terms. The Specialist, Rights and Clearances is also responsible for researching copyright ownership of WNET-owned programming and generating annual registrations of programming lists submitted to various worldwide copyright royalty collection agencies. Specific responsibilities include:
• Research and vet the acquisition of appropriate rights clearances in third-party licenses (i.e., acquired footage, photo, text and audio);
• Provide ongoing support to internal and commissioned production units regarding the acquisition of third-party content, including advising regarding licensor/vendor pricing;
• Work closely with production attorneys to identify and correct discrepancies in third-party licenses, including proper attribution and making sure license terms are accurate and appropriate;
• Develop and maintain business relationships with third-party content vendors;
• Prepare rights summaries/cost estimates in connection with distribution initiatives or ad hoc clearance projects;
• Conduct copyright royalty research and update annual spreadsheets;
• Additional duties, as assigned.
Qualified candidates will have excellent written and verbal communications skills, the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously under tight deadlines as well as the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with individuals and groups, both internally and externally. Additional qualifications include:
• Minimum of 3 years work experience in licensing or rights & clearances;
• Understanding of rights clearance terminology, especially as pertains to third-party licensing;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly advanced skills with Excel.
• Strong research, organizational and problem-solving skills.
Candidates with familiarity/experience with rights management technologies (e.g., RightsLine, FilmTrack) are preferred.
