Job Title: Visual Journalist/Editor
Job Type: Full-Time, Part-Time, or Freelancer
The Epoch Times is seeking a Visual Journalist/Editor who can transform complex reporting into compelling visual stories. This role merges journalism, design, and data storytelling to create graphics, infographics, maps, and interactive features that help readers better understand content.
The ideal candidate has strong editorial instincts and the ability to collaborate with reporters, editors, designers, and developers to produce visually driven journalism across digital and print platforms.
Key Responsibilities
-Identify opportunities where visuals can enhance or lead storytelling.
-Research topics and gather useful data to better explain editorial content.
-Translate complex news stories/editorial content, investigations, and data into clear and engaging visual formats.
-Write scripts for multiple types of video content.
-Help produce infographics, charts, diagrams, maps, videos, and other products for multiple platforms.
-Analyze datasets and transform them into charts, graphs, and other editorial visuals.
-Use data visualization tools to make visuals.
-Produce visual content under tight deadlines.
-Verify facts, sources, and datasets used in visual content.
-Edit text content in visuals.
-Ensure the editorial integrity, clarity, and accuracy in visual representations.
-Ensure visual content aligns with the organization’s editorial standards and style.
-Collaborate with reporters, producers, editors, photo editors, designers, illustrators, developers, and other colleagues to build visual projects.
Qualifications
-Bachelor’s degree in journalism, graphic design, data journalism, or related field.
-3+ years of experience producing editorial graphics, infographics, or visual journalism.
-Strong editorial judgment.
-Proficiency in data analysis, data visualization tools (e.g. Flourish, Datawrapper, Infogram, etc.)
-Ability to simplify complex information visually.
-Ability to work quickly and accurately in a deadline-driven environment.
-Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
-Excellent attention to detail.
-Attentive to current news events and awareness of American culture.
Preferred
-Proficiency in design, animation, and video editing tools (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effect, Final Cut Pro, etc.) is a plus.
-Basic coding knowledge (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for interactive graphics is a plus.
-Experience working in a newsroom or media organization is a plus.
-Knowledge of mapping tools (Mapbox, GIS, QGIS) is a plus.
