Seeking a highly proficient and resourceful HEAD OF PRODUCTION (LIVE MUSIC) based in LA to start immediately.
Part-time position; 50% remote / 40% on-location in LA / 10% travel
The position:
This is a rare opportunity for the right candidate to join this musical production company and grow and develop in tandem as this music spreads from LA to symphony orchestras and venues around the world. You will be the HEAD OF PRODUCTION, responsible for creating/maintaining/advancing the environment in which the musical productions can be realized to their fullest potential, and assembling/overseeing the elements of stage, lights, sound, talent, and front and back of house. In the case of touring productions with presenting orchestras, you will be remotely advancing all of these elements with the presenter and leading an assistant/coordinator under you that will handle personnel and logistics. In the case of self-presentations in LA, you will be responsible for assembling all the production elements/vendors, then act as Stage Manager.
Details of your role within the three categories of this company's productions:
1. Touring productions with symphony orchestras worldwide (2-4 per month, each with a different touring package):
• Remotely handle production advancing and recap: communicating production requirements/tech riders/hospitality riders to presenter, advancing marketing materials and merchandise, then following up for sales reports, show recaps and data
• Ensure that all departments and parties within the presenters organization (artistic, operations, marketing, etc) are coordinated and have the same information
• Communicate and coordinate with any media vendors (photography and video) and oversee receipt of media
• Maintain a database of show history, with all relevant information and links
• Maintain a database of talent personnel complete with links to essential information and assets
• Be on call for general assistance during the production run
• Be responsible for your assistant/coordinator, who will perform the following: Be the main point of contact for talent, handling booking of travel, advancing of itineraries, and being on call for general assistance during production run, Coordinate hospitality and meal orders, make reservations for post-concert dinners, etc., Keep track of receipts, expenses and owed performance fees and communicate them to business management
Generally, all this work is done remotely from LA, however occasional travel (4-6X per year) is required
2. Self-presented productions in LA and other markets and collaborations with current popular artists (6-8 per year):
• All of the above apply here, but even more logistical and coordination support is required
• Participate with the team in developing the vision for these self-presentations
• Oversee and coordinate all elements, which may include the build/installation/rental of stage, audio, lighting, video, etc.
• Coordinate with the production team of a popular artist in advance of a collaboration to understand and execute on all logistical elements
This category will require you to be on-site, whether in LA or traveling to other markets, overseeing everything, managing vendors and talent, and solving problems. There are quarterly self-presented shows in LA and plans are currently underway for a series of self-presentations in New York and Chicago. There is also a summer series in beautiful Sun Valley, Idaho.
3. Recording sessions: 5-7 per year
• Work with Head of Audio to ensure the recording environment is up to standard
• Liaise with recording studio to provide all necessary information
• Communicate/coordinate any media vendors (video/photo)
• Coordinate with copyists and printers for the preparation and printing of the music
• Maintain a personnel database of talent
• Be responsible for your assistant/coordinator, who will perform the following: Oversee the communication of pertinent information to talent personnel (musicians), Order lunch/dinner for artists, if necessary
You will be required to be in-studio, providing logistical support.
The ideal candidate:
• Has 5+ years' experience in production management
• Is highly knowledgeable in all areas of music event production: live sound, recorded sound, lights, video, hospitality, front and back of house, etc.
• Is highly resourceful and has a broad database and network of vendors for the above
• Takes ownership of the production and it passionate it running effectively and efficiently and having maximum impact
• Enjoys the challenge of the seemingly impossible
• Is above all incredibly capable and dependable; is someone who accomplishes intricate and involved tasks proficiently and on-time
• Understands acutely the environment of a production run- from initial planning to rehearsals to show day- and has an innate feel for what is needed at all times from artists, presenters and vendors
• Is an excellent communicator and understands the nuances of communicating with artists vs vendors vs clients
• Quickly identifies problems and makes sure they are solved
• Can effectively and elegantly lead a team
• Has exposure to a variety of musical enterprises, ideally within both classical music and contemporary popular music
• Is highly competent with Google Workspace/Microsoft Office- creating docs and spreadsheets, to-do lists, taking notes, and maintaining databases
Part-time position. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
