Staff Writer

Penske Media Corporation (Rolling Stone, Variety, Deadline, SXSW…) is looking for an ambitious and entrepreneurial writer/reporter to cover consumer and retail trends for SPY, our men’s lifestyle and e-commerce site. The successful candidate will be comfortable in a general assignment role and have some prior experience in service journalism.

The Staff Writer will report to the Editor-in-Chief of SPY and work with vertical editors to report unexpected, data-supported stories about consumer behavior for an audience of young, affluent men. In addition, the Staff Writer will be charged with owning franchises, testing products, and authoring detailed, carefully sourced buying guides. The Staff Writer will be expected to pitch constantly and to playfully engage with the news cycle. The role will require an ability to move quickly between different projects, a strong understanding of SEO best practices, and a deep curiosity about the world. A sense of humor will also help.

Responsibilities:

Editorial
• Pitch stories relevant to an audience of late 20s, early 30s men with disposable income.
• Identify and cover emerging consumer trends.
• Report on industry trends, specifically around pricing.
• Cover popular culture as it pertains to purchasing behaviors.
• Take the lead on editorial packages and new initiatives.
• Engage with performance data in order to refine coverage priorities.

Qualifications:

• Minimum 5 years of media experience. Prior e-commerce experience preferred.
• At least 3 years of reporting experience.
• A strong understanding of digital publishing.
• Desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment
• Recommended Tools: Google Analytics, Google Webmaster tools, WordPress, SEMRush, DeepCrawler, SEOmoz
• Previous experience in an editor role is a plus.

Typical wage range: $70k - $85K.

Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The typical candidate is hired below midpoint of the range. The total compensation package for this position will also include other elements, a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off benefits.
