Sportico is hiring an editor to join the award-winning sports business news publication.
We are seeking an Editor with exceptional news judgment, editing skill and sports business or financial reporting experience to join a fluid and real-time multimedia newsroom.
Candidates must have a sharp eye for copy, grammar, and AP Style, along with the ability to write clear, concise headlines and take decisive action. Experience with newsletter production, SEO optimization, photo editing, and social media engagement is preferred.
Reporting and writing in addition to editing will be expected with this role, which will be responsible for site operations during the afternoon and evening hours, approximately 3p.m. to midnight ET, Monday-Friday. The editor will ultimately be responsible for the production of two Sportico newsletters along with management of their growth and distribution.
Experience managing a team of reporters is preferred, as is familiarity with financial markets, business operating procedures, accounting or corporate earnings. This candidate must be a self-starter and able to operate unsupervised, and the role can be based in Los Angeles or New York.
Responsibilities:
• Run the Sportico news desk during p.m. hours, monitor West Coast and late-breaking news.
• Assemble and produce two newsletters with staff assistance, covering sports business news of the day. Update website and line edit stories as needed.
• Writing opportunities and staff development are included in this role, which will be active from 3p.m. to midnight ET (noon- 9 p.m.PT) from Monday through Saturday.
• Occasional night, weekend or special assignment duties may be required.
Requirements:
• A commitment to accuracy and news judgment under tight deadlines
• 3 years of sports or business editing experience
• Strong editing and writing skills to produce market-moving stories in a fast-paced environment
• The ability to take initiative, manage multiple priorities, complete assignments on time and follow up with a strong attention to detail
• Proficiency with WordPress, Exact Target, MS Office and SEO is preferred
• The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 10am - 7pm PT
Typical wage range: $80k - $85k. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The typical candidate is hired below midpoint of the range. The total compensation package for this position will also include other elements, a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off benefits.
