Part Time Unpaid Internship
Internship Description:
The SXSW Film department is seeking an individual who is eager to learn more about pre-event planning at a Film Festival. This will be a broad, hands-on introduction to the basics of internal operations, primarily focused on Festival scheduling with the Festival Director and key programmers. This internship will require continual cross-referencing of information and quick problem-solving, so excellent attention to detail and a love of puzzles and spreadsheets are a must.
You must be currently enrolled in an accredited university or college to be eligible for the SXSW
Please note that this internship is unpaid.
What you will learn:
- Key processes and systems to put on a major event with the SXSW screening team, filmmakers, and festival jurors
- How to use Filemaker Pro and Attendease to schedule screenings
- The ins and outs of internal operations at a major Film Festival
- How to evaluate introductions and Q&As to assess performance and effectiveness
- The intricate art of scheduling 400 screenings over a 9-day period, as well as Q&As and other aspects of Film Festivals
Duties and Tasks:
- Help to track appropriate film and filmmaker stats for each accepted film.
- Assist in proofing the Film Festival schedule as it's built, with a special eye on screening times and venues.
- Create an editable schedule grid for the programming team and keep it updated as it changes.
- Help keep track of scheduling requests from filmmakers, studios, and sales agents.
- Help proof printed scheduling materials for the Film Pocket Guide and Austin Chronicle.
- Work closely with the Film Programming Coordinator in building the Film Festival schedule.
- Act as a Juror Liaison during the event, meeting Film Festival Jurors prior to their screenings to answer questions and explain the process. Jurors are typically national journalists of note.
- Monitor Intros and Q&As performed by Filmmaker Alumni at screenings over the course of the Festival.
Qualifications
Candidates should:
- Have strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Be excited by complicated puzzles and problem-solving
- Have an exceptional work ethic with the ability to both multitask and work independently
- Be eager to dive in and help when they can
- Be able to take initiative when needed
- Have a good attitude, time management skills, and a sense of professionalism
- Work well in a team setting
- Be able to adapt and maintain composure in a fast-paced environment
- Possess good communication skills and have proper phone and email etiquette
- Having a working knowledge of Filemaker Pro, Gmail, Google Calendar/Docs, and Mac computers is a plus
Availability:
This position runs January 2020 - April 2020 and requires a time commitment of 12-20 hours a week with a minimum of 3 days onsite per week in the SXSW office in downtown Austin.
Full-time availability is required during SXSW 2020 March 13 - March 22
