Audit, Participations & Residuals Finance Intern, CORP – Summer 2023
The Sony Pictures Entertainment Internship program offers a unique opportunity to work alongside the teams that come together to create movies, TV shows, and other great experiences. These seasonal, paid assignments provide meaningful and productive work that allows you to build your resume, experience and develop your skills further. You will be provided with challenging tasks, real-world experience, valuable networking opportunities, and many educational and social opportunities. This Summer Internship is from May/June through Sept. 1st (start and end dates are flexibile based on school schedules) and all candidates must be able to work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday in the specified location This is not a remote role. A hybrid work option may or may not be available.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
We are searching for 4-5 Interns to support our Participations, Residuals, and Audit teams. Below are some details on what to expect in each area but ultimately the hiring team will partner with you to select the best area based on your skill set.
Departments:
Participations - The Participations group is responsible for preparing and delivering royalty reports to third-party participants on all film, television and new media libraries. The Participations Analyst is responsible for recurring statement issuance, ensuring all contractual agreements and financial obligations are being met.
Residuals - Residuals are payments made to various talent resulting from re-exhibition of product. SPE entities are signatory to collective bargaining agreements with the various guilds and pension plans (representing writers, directors, actors, musicians and other individuals involved in the production of entertainment product). Residual obligations are mandated by a union Collective Bargaining Agreement (''CBA''), which are generally renegotiated every three years. The Residuals Department provides estimates of residual costs to the Lines of Business (''LOB'') and works closely with the LOB Finance Groups on any questions related to residuals. The Residuals Department is responsible for gathering delivery documents, calculating and generating payments to the various Guilds based on the various guild agreements.
Residuals and Participations 3rd Party Audit (''Audit'') - The Audit group manages audits initiated by the Company's participants and Guilds in regard to the distribution of all motion picture products. The group manages approximately 75 to 100 audits in various stages per year. The audit group handles everything from contract review, audit scoping, day-to-day management of audit requests and auditor interaction, and eventual settlement of any issues that arise.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Below are examples of some tasks based on the assigned team.
Option 1 (Participations ) - Withholding Taxes: Work with Participations department Admin Assistant to gather various documents and lists used to identify international payees, flag those payees in the PAWS system to ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date, and to develop a process flow. Once all the data is in order, the intern will work with PAWS IT team to automate the information gathering and form population process.
Option 2 (Participations) - International Theatrical Titles: Work with a Participations Manager -, and SVP, Legal, Int'l Productions, Motion Picture and a co-head of International Production, Business Operations and Strategy for Sony Pictures Intl Productions to ensure we have a comprehensive listing of all titles for reporting. This includes gathering documents for titles not currently in PAWS, and assisting with abstracting, set-ups, and statement issuance.
Option 3 (Residuals) - Residuals EP Adaptor Rule Clean-Up: Work with the Residuals Director to streamline existing adaptor rules -- the treatment of receipts, markets, doctypes, and other metadata to ensure data falls into the correct reporting buckets. Help develop and automate reconciliation processes.
Option 4 (3rd Party Audit) Proration Audits: Assist an Executive Director with gathering and reviewing documents for ongoing MPI proration audits. Reviewing audit claims and gathering necessary documents needed to respond to outstanding audit claims in order to reduce exposure from late payment liquidated damages (contractual interest and late fees). Work with Residuals analyst on reviewing calculations for TV and acquisition titles.
Option 5 (3rd Party Audit) - Audit and Statement Support [Pending Dept Needs]: Assist with running reports, creating automated forms for CG to run initial package reports, preparing analyses, identifying statements for future auto--processing in PAWS, and other administrative work.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications include: enrollment in an accredited college/university for the duration of the internship; basic to advanced Excel skills; working knowledge of other MS Office products such as Word and PowerPoint; ability to read and understand legal documents; knowledge of accounting principles and systems; ability to work independently, and ability to work in a team environment; good communication skills, both written and verbal.
