Manager, Technical Accounting
Sony Pictures Entertainment (''SPE'') is seeking a financial professional in its Technical Accounting team. The team is accountable for consulting and advising business units on a proactive basis on accounting issues and policies, internal controls, and corporate governance. In addition, the group serves as a liaison to the external auditors, Tax and Internal Audit and assists in preparation and retention of Financial Statement Information and disclosures in coordination with Sony Corporation of America (SCA), Sony Corporation and the business units within SPE.
The Manager will be SPE's subject matter expert for revenue recognition. As a business advisor and individual contributor, this role will support SPE's global operations, and will work closely with sales, operations legal and finance teams. The individual must understand, analyze and communicate financial impacts to revenue throughout the organization in accordance with the new revenue recognition accounting pronouncement, ASC606.
The Manager will provide rapid and detailed feedback on new contract language and revenue structures, drive consistency on revenue transactions and support the continuous improvement of systems, processes and controls. In addition, the role will manage the Company's revenue accounting policies and procedures to ensure they are effective and efficient, while ensuring that the Company's accounting policies and positions are properly documented and in accordance with the applicable U.S. GAAP pronouncements, specifically ASC606, as well as IFRS.
Responsibilities:
• Act as the primary technical accounting resource for revenue recognition for SPE by researching, resolving and documenting accounting issues
• Develop accounting memos to support SPE's position and policy guidelines on specific revenue recognition and disclosure issues across all business units and diverse revenue types
• Provide technical accounting guidance in negotiating and structuring deals
• Collaborate with sales, operations legal and finance teams to review and evaluate the impact of draft contracts for revenue recognition
• Evaluate the recording of revenue from customer contracts to ensure that revenue is recognized accurately and forecasted appropriately in accordance with accounting rules
• Support the budget and forecast process
• Manage the process of maintaining and updating SPE's revenue recognition policies and procedures
• Participate in developing and maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring quality controls over revenue transactions and reporting, including disclosures
• Support the external audit process to ensure the company is compliant with the latest revenue recognition accounting technical guidance, including disclosure requirement
• Continuously improve on current processes to drive a more efficient monthly and quarterly financial statement close of revenue related accounts and disclosures
• Provide ongoing training and support to the business units
• Other special projects as necessary
Requirements:
• Minimum of 6 years accounting and finance experience
• Experience with a Big 4 or other national accounting firm
• BA or BS degree in finance/economics/accounting
• CPA or equivalent
• Strong technical accounting background
• Media and Entertainment experience preferred
• Experience in the application of ASC 606 preferred
• Working knowledge of current authoritative literature related to revenue recognition
• Able to take the lead in drafting new technical revenue accounting memos and assessments as needed
• Excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written
• Strong organizational skills to balance priorities, complete projects in a timely manner and consistently manage own workload
• Comfortable in reviewing complex contracts or other documents, working with cross functional internal and external teams
• Detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to work independently to meet deadlines
• Able to communicate highly technical perspectives to individuals with varying degrees of accounting experience ranging from sales personnel and certain other customer-facing individuals, other finance personnel, and management-level individuals
