Director, U.S. Distribution Business Affairs
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is looking for a Director of Business Affairs to join our U.S. distribution business. This position is operationally integrated within the business unit and will be responsible for providing business and legal support for the organization's various lines of business, which include basic cable, subscription pay, SVOD, free/advertiser-supported VOD, and free broadcast television distribution, and ad sales. This position will also work closely with SPT's Production Business Affairs team with respect to off-network distribution rights for SPT's original television productions.
This position requires a self-directed, diplomatic, confidence-inspiring and problem-solving personality. The successful candidate will have strong analytical skills combined with a well-developed business acumen in order to provide concise, actionable advice to the most senior executives. The successful candidate will also have outstanding academic credentials and relevant legal/business affairs experience with a major studio, major law firm or media company that deals extensively with major studio content providers.
Key Responsibilities:
• Work closely with sales executives to advise on distribution deal structure, planning, and strategy.
• Handle drafting and negotiating of agreements, term sheets, offer letters, and correspondence with traditional linear television networks/stations, digital on-demand services, and ad buyers/agencies, as well as agreements with producers to acquire distribution rights to feature films and television content.
• Conduct rights research and analyses and effectively summarize and disseminate information to various stakeholders across the company.
• Work with sales planning team on distribution initiatives and strategic opportunities.
• Review, manage and advise on contractual commitments and MFN terms across deals and lines of business.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
• Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from a top-ranked accredited law school.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant transactional experience at a nationally recognized law firm or in-house legal/business affairs department at a studio or media company.
• Strong business sense and ability to exercise good business judgement.
• Exceptional drafting, negotiating, and analytical skills.
• Ability to function independently and provide responsible, timely and top-quality deal support with superior work product.
• Effective communicator (verbal and written) with an ability to interact comfortably with internal and external constituents of all levels.
