Director Technology, New Media
The Director, Technology reports to Vice President New Media Technology in the Sony Pictures New Media group. The Director of Technology will engage at an engineering level in a range of technology projects with internal teams and 3rd party companies. The New Media group is focused on creating technology solutions that create new business opportunities as well as developing the core Privilege Platform, a custom multi-tenant media platform. The New Media group lives on the cutting edge so projects may encompass Audio technology, Video technology, VR/AR/MR, encryption / DRM, Tools development, AI and anything in-between.
With the core goal of developing entertainment services on emerging platforms both transactional and bundled, evaluating new technology and production of software development projects. Responsibilities include: ideation, concept development, platform architecture, video encoding, DRM development and implementation, adherence to content protection and digital policy guidelines, website and app management, requirements gathering, developing RFPs, vendor selection, multi-language engineering management, documentation, tools development, research and development of new technology, VR development and porting, hardware design/costing, hardware evaluation, hardware acquisition, partner management, app portal and partner management (google, Apple, Microsoft), hosting and CDN management, and end-to-end project management and deployment. This person is responsible for identifying and communicating technology goals and risks to all stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and documenter who has a strong grasp of technology, development practices, and video services who is also outgoing, dynamic and enthusiastic. This person has a demonstrated ability to architect, build and maintain technology solutions while taking input from multiple sources.
Responsibilities:
• Works with Sr. Management to understand and document priorities
• Managing technical initiatives including but not limited to video quality standard to investigating new technologies and managing internal or external development resources.
• Defines and documents the technology roadmap.
• Works with 3rd party developers to bring technology to life
• Balances formalized development practices and documentation with a high-speed dynamic approach.
• Requires the ability to explain technical projects and documentation to management which will guide resource investments in hardware, software, and workflows
• Generate ''white paper'' level documents on technology and solutions within New Media
• Create technology presentations and demonstrations
• Work with 3rd party companies to evaluate technology solutions
• Write documents/emails in industry accepted format for peer review and presentation/collaboration
• Define developments that support the Technology group and fit into larger product development schedules.
• Ensure work-loads are distributed and there are no single points of failure (i.e., only one developer who knows how to perform a task)
• Helping set both general and specific goals for the team as a whole and individuals. e.g.,
• Bringing new ideas to team and helping expand contracts
• Weekly review of team metrics (e.g., # of test iterations per title; how well we record milestones; which projects are on track, etc)
• Leading by example and getting hands dirty when needed, but also not allowing yourself to get "caught in the weeds" to the exclusion of seeing the big pictures.
• Set expectations clearly and demand excellence from the team.
Technical / Requirements:
• Minimum 6 years of equivalent work experience.
• Familiar with modern development practices, including Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) and latest additions to APIs for Android, iOS, W3C, etc.
• Understanding of the principles and applicability of the OSI networking model.
• Experience with network debugging and optimization, including wireshark monitoring and server API tuning.
• Ability to architect and configure cloud-based scalable architectures under AWS at a minimum and ideally also Google Cloud Platform and MS Azure.
• Hands-on experience with agile-based software development projects, including preferred code branching strategies.
• Demonstrated experience in architecting and technically managing high profile projects of world-wide, high availability scope.
• Hands-on experience writing and testing software using C, C++ or Java.
• Experience creating and reviewing software architectures using Unified Modeling Language (UML)
• Ability to design and reverse engineer relational databases, including creating Entity Relationship Diagrams, normalizing data, etc.
• Ability to explain technical requirements to non-technical people and vice versa
• Must be well versed in how Digital Content is prepared, delivered and supplied (including business rules)
• Familiar with Digital Content data/meta data etc
• Experienced in building reliable, scalable, high performance solutions utilising cloud infrastructure
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
• Must have a high sense of urgency and with solutions-oriented work approach
• A high level of drive with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
• A team player who supports, encourages and shares knowledge with others.
• A self-starter with the ability to work under pressure and with limited supervision.
• The ability to work as part of an integrated team or on an individual basis.

• A strong technology/creative tech background delivering across multiple platforms.

• Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills, able to learn on the fly
