Director, Distribution Canada
Sony Pictures Television is one of the industry's leading content providers in producing, distributing and delivering programming worldwide in every genre and for every platform.
The Director is an integral member of the Distribution team who participates in all aspects of Sony's TV distribution business in Canada. As the television landscape becomes increasing fragmented, content rights and windows have become equally complex. This role requires an individual who is able to think strategically and maximize revenue through the optimization of Sony's content availability. The Director must have existing client relationships in the market, be skilled at negotiating under pressure, provide leadership to the team and have a passion for film and television content.
Responsibilities:
• Conventional Networks (Free TV) / Simulcast – Along side the VP of Distribution, manage all networks series sales in both English and French Canada and seek to drive library product sales. This includes managing simulcast opportunities, ratings interpretation, tracking of US network telecasts, run-of-series commitments, catch-up rights, copy protection, pre-release, promotional support through SPT Marketing. Working with the Manager of Distribution to pursue conventional first-run and library deals with independent networks.
• AVOD/FAST – As new platforms arise in the AVOD and FAST channel space, this role will be integral in the shaping of Sony's strategy, deal negotiation and channel analytics, ensuring that Sony's content is maximized without being over-exposed.
• SVOD – Working hand-in-hand with the VP of Distribution and the Sony's Global Distribution team, help with the pitch, negotiation, deal structure and deal maintenance for major SVOD players such as Netflix, Amazon, Crave and more.
• Specialty Networks (Cable) – Responsible for the sale and deal management in both English and French Canada for first-run and library features and series. Constant evaluation of Sony's catalogue to drive library product sales.
• Formats – Management of unscripted sales, with oversight of the negotiation of the format license agreements with the broadcast or production company.
• Leadership – As a senior leader of the SPE team in Canada, this role has direct oversight of the Manager of Distribution and an overall leadership role within the Toronto office.
Job Requirements
• Conventional Television – Must have an excellent grasp of conventional television and simultaneous substitution in Canada. Must understand how US network programs are bought/sold and scheduled in Canada and be able to interpret linear and digital ratings and other performance metrics.
• Negotiation – Must have excellent negotiation skills and perform well under pressure. Has the ability to push for the best possible outcome for Sony while still maintaining strong client relations. Always seeking the win-win situation.
• Deal Management – Ensuring that the deals are properly serviced and terms are being abided to by the client at all times.
• Client Relationships – Able to develop, build and nurture exceptionally strong and lasting relationships with key clients and colleagues.
• Strategy – Assisting in developing and implementing strategic sales plan to expand Sony's market prominence and reach business objectives.
• Contracts – Must have an excellent understanding of complex legal language and concepts and be able to work with Sony's legal department and the client to execute long form agreements.
• Planning – Working closely with the Sales Planning team, able contribute to the strategic availing, windowing and pricing of content with the goal of maximizing revenue.
• Budgeting – Provide sales estimates and projections on individual deals and products and ensure such projects are met.
• Leadership – This role has a direct report and will be responsible for the mentorship of that person.
• Internal Collaboration – Working closely with various other internal stakeholders at Sony such as Marketing, Publicity, Sales Planning, Legal, Technology, Operations, US Sales, Finance and others to support our deals and clients and improve efficiencies.
Education
, Years of Experience, Specialized Knowledge or Skills Required:
• 8-10 years of experience in Canadian media, with a strong preference for conventional television programming and/or acquisitions experience.
• Advanced sales and/or acquisitions, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working with output deals/distribution deals in all related media categories.
• Very good understanding of current media landscape in Canada.
• Knowledge of digital rights and their implications.
• Understanding of media contracts and experience working with Legal.
• Familiarity with Sony Pictures library and current series/features.
• Strong, developed relationships in Canadian media market.
• Excellent communication (verbal/written) skills.
• Results-driven with strong customer focus and relationship management.
• English fluency is required. Fluency in French/Spanish is a plus
• An ability to review and prepare budgets.
• Experience leading and managing others.
• Proficient technical skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
• Post-secondary degree is required.
