Director Data Science, Audience Analytics and Activation represents an exciting new role at Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), positioned at the fast-moving intersection of film marketing strategy, digital ad tech, and big data / predictive modeling. The role is built for a self-starter, and creative, quantitative thinker; someone comfortable pushing for structured insights amidst disparate data sets, and excited about applying data and analytics to evolving Film Marketing.
At Sony Pictures, our mission is to map relevant movie and TV series content to consumers and audiences across transactional, subscription and linear viewing platforms. We're building data products and visualization tools and insights platform that will predict audience preferences and behavior for library and new releases to drive growth of engagement and consumption of Sony produced content. Sony produces franchise brands such as Spiderman, Men in Black and Jumanji, through to TV franchises such as Breaking Bad, Blacklist and Better Call Saul. Our Data team is responsible for aggregating millions of consumer data points to best in class predictive models, consumer trends systems, recommendation engines and more!
In the role of Director, Data Science for The Sony Pictures Audience Analytics and Activation Division, you must possess a passion for pioneering an empirical and data-driven culture. The candidate must have a proven track record of developing business model solutions and extracting meaningful business insights from big data. You're a highly skilled, commercially focused and motivated Data Scientist looking for exciting projects that will challenge you to demonstrate expertise and leadership in building out our advanced analytics models, with the view of mapping relevant content to surprise and delight audiences.
With a deep understanding of ML frameworks, ML pipelines and statistics you'll leverage your programming, data wrangling, and analytical expertise to solve business problems, build data products and frameworks, track performance, automate testing, and more. Working closely with the rest of our Analytics team and partnering with our BI team, you'll assist in creating the foundation for how we build data-driven applications, tools, and experiences for our internal business partners.
Core Responsibilities include:
• Execute the data vision strategy and goals ensuring those are consistent with the Division's business requirements
• As part of the Data Science team, help develop analytical capabilities, data products and tools to enable data query and deliver solutions to business requests
• Contribute and provide thought leadership to the business and key stakeholders.
• Develop new approaches to understand the consumer and solve complex business problems such as optimizing product performance, gross profit and adoption.
• Generate actionable audience insights using advanced statistical techniques such as predictive statistical models, audience profiling, segmentation analysis, survey and test design, exploratory analysis and data mining.
• Understand in depth, design and inform statistical testing for audience strategy.
• Design user interfaces to overlay ML models, and enable business partners to access models, query results and scenarios.
• Build presentations and reports to communicate statistical modeling results
• Can manage ingestion and cleansing of large unstructured data and developing analytical capability to query the data and respond to user requests using a wide range of technologies including.
• Productionalize codes and models via various tools and technologies (such as R Connect and R Studio) to deliver scale, efficiency and speed.
• Profile, explore, connect and analyze extensive, often disjointed, and unstructured data-sets including product meta data, user level data, primary research, audience profiles, social commentary and DMP data.
Skill In:
• Advanced Statistics – Supervised and unsupervised machine learning models, including regularization, feature engineering, training, as well as interpretation and integrity. Experience with clustering, affinity analysis, segmentation, customer profiling.
• Specific familiarity with xgboost, caret, ggplot2 packages
• Programming – Expertise with SQL data models (logical, physical, conceptual), R (required), Python (a plus, NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn), R Studio & Shiny apps (also a plus), including familiarity with databases, data wrangling, maintenance, cleaning. Comfort with ETL, API strategies.
• Visualization & Presentation – Represent complex information in easily understood visualization (including Tableau, PowerPoint, etc). Communicating clearly to executives, technology partners, agencies, and contributing to projects and meetings
• Project Management – Strong attention to detail, willingness to wear multiple hats, building and tracking a work plan in a fast-based environment
• Marketing Measurement Methodologies – Familiarity around measuring digital impact (MMM, closed loop studies, geographic and pacing variability modeling, regressions)
Ability To:
• Analyze and organize large data sets to create a cohesive story that can inform marketing strategies
• Understand in depth, design and inform statistically valid tests with test and control groups and to manage the process of identifying testing strategies
• Experiment with various tools and technologies, with the end goal of creating innovative data-driven insights at a quick pace.
• Handle data wrangling, cleansing, QC, as new data is considered. Success will require assisting Sony's IT team to acquire/transfer, store, organize and operationalize data.
• Provide strategic vision to a growing data science team, including developing data structures and analytical frameworks that will sustain our long-term vision.
• Work collaboratively and horizontally across multiple teams with fragmented, vertical (title-by-title) priorities
• Translate business objectives into analytical functions, including ability to quantitatively assess risk.
Knowledge of:
• Business Processes: Experience with Agile methodology (Jira), Git
• Digital media/marketing landscape – Familiarity with addressable media strategies, CRM, ad-tech (i.e. Krux, DCM), audience buying platforms and methodologies, digital KPIs
• Film marketing & data science: basic strategies, campaign tactics and common social/digital KPIs. Passion for movies, and knowledge of existing industry tools, studies, methodologies and data sets is a major plus!
Other:
• Must have an in-depth knowledge of advanced statistical techniques, machine learning, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques including regressions, cluster analysis test design, variable reduction, non-parametric tests and forecasting methodologies.
