Counsel, Intellectual Property
The Intellectual Property team is seeking a Counsel to work in its TRA©K-IP department, which is responsible for copyright administration and chain of title advice, rights analysis and administration, and MPAA Title Clearance. Reporting to the department's Vice President, Intellectual Property, the Counsel will learn and perform all aspects of the department's work, as needed, and assist the Vice President in providing legal review of the department's work and advice to its many clients.
SPE's TRA©K-IP Group serves clients across SPE's divisions, including: motion picture and television production and acquisitions; local language productions and acquisitions; worldwide distribution; home entertainment; and digital networks. The environment is fast-paced and allows for opportunities to work on diverse subject matter.
Responsibilities
include:
• Advise on rights and copyright status regarding the company's works. Includes distribution, remake/sequel, live stage and other ancillary & subsidiary rights, and requires knowledge of copyright termination and reversion.
• Advise on proper interpretation of many types of entertainment contracts, including literary property agreements, co-financing and distribution agreements, network license agreement, and talent agreements.
• Provide legal guidance to the team and clients regarding chain of title issues and copyright registrations and recordations of licenses and agreements.
• Ensure that legal issues are clearly communicated to clients.
Qualifications:
• Law degree
• Member in good standing of the CA Bar
• Experience with entertainment industry contracts strongly preferred
• Experience with copyright and chain of title issues a plus
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Excellent analytical and issue-spotting skills
• Excellent legal and business judgment
• Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact in a collaborative spirit
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
