Full Time Job
The Analyst, Copyright will work as part of the Copyright team at Sony Music to ensure that the wide range of copyright issues related to products released by the Columbia, Epic and other labels as required are addressed in an effective and timely manner. The Analyst will be responsible for assigned releases, coordinating with several parties inside and outside of SME to obtain and properly assess the information necessary to clear rights with publishers and pay them accordingly as required.
Responsibilities
• Review relevant labels upcoming release schedules and track assigned releases.
• Review track listings for upcoming albums to assess potential copyright clearance, rights and cost issues.
• Obtain publisher approval and confirm license terms for upcoming releases as needed.
• Work with Clearance Coordinator to ensure that writer and publisher information is confirmed in a timely and accurate manner.
• Work with Clearance Coordinator to confirm licensing terms match approved negotiated terms.
• Obtain and confirm songwriter and publisher ownership splits/shares for songs where assigned.
• Obtain, review and interpret relevant artist and producer contracts to ensure proper application.
• Enter and confirm contract information into contract summary system.
• Enter and confirm copyright royalty rates into royalty system.
• Coordinate proper administration of mechanical, digital and synch licenses.
• Liaise with Release Planning, A&R Administration, Business Affairs, and Finance regarding complex and high priority issues.
• Maintain and track product financial information, including accruals.
• Negotiate with publishers for certain rights as necessary (e.g. synchronization and broadcast rights for video and facilitate sample clearance).
• Resolve outstanding copyright issues on catalog releases including, but not limited to, research and resolution of audit claims.
• Other related duties and special projects as needed.
Qualifications
• Bachelor Degree
• 2-3 years relevant experience with standard music copyright clearances, preferably for audio, video and digital content and products.
• Previous experience with standard mechanical licensing and/or synchronization licensing and clearing, preferably for audio, video and digital content and products.
• Proven time management skills and ability to quickly and accurately complete a high volume of work under tight deadlines.
• Excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills, including ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner.
• Strong organizational skills with ability to work on multiple complex and time-sensitive projects.
• Solid negotiating skills and ability to problem solve and make sound business judgement decisions.
• Flexible, detail oriented and strong work ethic.
• Solid understanding of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Excellent quantitative and analytical skills; strong mathematical skills and basic understanding of royalty accounting concepts preferred.
