Having created visually spectacular images for more than 100 live-action and animated productions over its 28-year history the studio is also a leader in technology, developing software and tools that have helped solve industry-wide challenges and deliver spectacular visuals to the big screen.
The Sony Pictures Imageworks Technology Group comprises the Systems Engineering and Software Development teams dedicated to developing and supporting the computing, software and production management technology platform for the studio.
Sony Pictures Imageworks is looking for Software Engineer Co-op students to join our Vancouver, Canada Software Development teams for a duration of 8 months!
Responsibilities
• Learning to apply in house proprietary and 3rd Party software
• Development projects to help improve user experience
• Provide customer service and technical assistance of systems to users
• This position requires collaboration with other teammates, team / project leads, architects, departments, managers and artists to develop and implement innovative tools and systems
Requirements
• Currently enrolled in your final year and a part of an official Co-op program via a University or College
• A successful candidate must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills with a technical background in computer science and software engineering
• Versatility, resourcefulness, and adaptability are key characteristics to possess for this job
• Familiarity with CG and VFX industry is preferred, but not required
Duration: 8 months
Primary responsibilities include:
• Learn proprietary and third party web tools, linux desktop applications and/or backend systems
• Participate in the development efforts of existing open source projects
• Collaborate with teammates to develop new tools or overhaul legacy tools to modernize production workflows
• Directly interact with end users to provide customer support
• Participate in team daily stand ups
Required Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering or pursuing a Masters in the same fields
• Must have previously completed an 8 month co-op in Software Development or Quality Assurance (QA)
• Software development experience using Python
Nice to have:
• Coding experience with Java and Javascript
• Knowledge of Django framework
• Knowledge of UNIX / Linux
• Familiarity of source control systems like git
• Familiarity of image rendering with 3D applications
• Interest in open source projects like OSL, OpenColorIO, Opencue, OpenVDB, OpenImageIO, etc

The anticipated base salary for this position is $25/hr. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
