The Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the company's legal, business, and operational strategies. This executive position demands a strong legal background, excellent negotiation and business acumen, and a proven track record in the entertainment industry. The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit and experience building a team from scratch.
Responsibilities
• Legal Compliance and Risk Management:
• Oversee all legal and compliance matters related to film and television production, distribution, licensing, and rights acquisition.
• Provide guidance and ensure compliance with industry regulations, intellectual property laws, and contractual obligations.
• Deal Structuring and Negotiation:
• Lead negotiations for key agreements, including talent contracts, production deals, distribution agreements, licensing agreements, and partnerships.
• Structure and negotiate complex contracts, ensuring favorable terms and conditions for the company.
• Intellectual Property and Rights Management:
• Manage the acquisition, protection, and exploitation of intellectual property rights related to film and television programming, including copyrights, trademarks, and other proprietary rights.
• Oversee the enforcement of the company's rights and interests in collaboration with external legal resources.
• Operational Strategy and Management:
• Develop and execute operational strategies for film and television divisions, optimizing efficiency, resource allocation, and project execution.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline operations and enhance productivity.
• Contract Administration and Compliance:
• Establish and maintain contract management systems, processes, and controls to ensure proper contract administration and compliance.
• Train relevant staff on contract requirements and compliance protocols.
• Strategic Business Advisory:
• Partner with senior management to provide strategic legal, business, and operational advice on corporate and operational matters to drive business growth and mitigate risks.
• Assist in evaluating and structuring potential business opportunities and partnerships.
• Dispute Resolution:
• Oversee legal disputes and litigation related to film and television operations, working with external counsel as needed to achieve optimal resolutions.
• Team Leadership and Development:
• Lead and mentor a high-performing legal and operations team, providing guidance, feedback, and professional growth opportunities.
• Cultivate a positive and innovative work culture within the Business & Legal Affairs and Operations departments.
Requirements
• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the relevant state bar association
• 15 years Business & Legal Affairs experience in film and/or television production; mix of scripted and non-scripted a plus
• Passion for sports, a plus
• Proven leadership experience in business & legal affairs and operations within the film and television or entertainment industry
• Strong understanding of entertainment law, intellectual property, contracts, operations, and industry practices
• Exceptional negotiation, communication, and analytical skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, while maintaining high standards of quality and professionalism
• Bachelor's degree in business, law, or a related field (Master of Laws - LLM - preferred)
The salary range for this position in Los Angeles is $350,000 – $400,000. The salary offered may vary based on the candidate's location, qualifications, experience and relevant expertise, among other factors. The range indicated is for base salary only and does not reflect the total compensation package, including bonus, benefits, etc.
