Simon & Schuster is a dynamic and forward-thinking publishing house committed to bringing diverse and compelling stories to readers worldwide. We are seeking an experienced and motivated Subsidiary Rights Director to join our organization.
As the Subsidiary Rights Director, you will play a pivotal role in maximizing the revenue potential of our published works by managing and negotiating subsidiary rights, including but not limited to foreign rights, film and television rights, audio rights, and more. This position requires a strategic thinker with excellent communication and negotiation skills, a deep understanding of the publishing industry, and a passion for connecting stories with diverse audiences globally.
Responsibilities:
1. Rights Management:
• Develop and implement a comprehensive subsidiary rights strategy for the entire catalog of published works.
• Manage the rights portfolio, including foreign rights, audio rights, film and television rights, and other subsidiary rights.
2. Negotiation and Licensing:
• Negotiate and secure favorable licensing agreements for subsidiary rights with international publishers, film and television producers, audiobook publishers, and other relevant partners.
• Collaborate with legal and finance teams to ensure all agreements are compliant and meet company standards.
3. Market Research:
• Stay informed about industry trends and market demands related to subsidiary rights.
• Identify potential opportunities for rights exploitation and expansion into new markets.
4. Relationship Management:
• Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with international publishers, literary agents, film and television producers, and other industry professionals.
• Represent the company at international book fairs and rights events.
5. Collaboration:
• Work closely with editorial, marketing, and sales teams to align subsidiary rights strategy with overall publishing goals.
• Provide guidance on rights considerations during the acquisition process.
6. Reporting and Analysis:
• Track and analyze subsidiary rights revenue, providing regular reports to senior management.
• Make data-driven recommendations to optimize rights strategies.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in English, Publishing, Business, or a related field. Advanced degree a plus.
• Proven experience in subsidiary rights management within the publishing industry.
• Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• In-depth knowledge of global publishing markets and trends.
• Ability to travel internationally for book fairs and rights events.
• Familiarity with digital rights and emerging trends in the publishing landscape.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The annual salary for this position is $110,000.00 - $120,000.00
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
