Freelance, Production Paralegal
Sesame Workshop is seeking a Freelance Production Paralegal to join our legal and business affairs team. The Freelance Production Paralegal will report to the Senior Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, working on talent related matters for Sesame's busy production group. The Freelance Production Paralegal must have experience working with union/guild matters, contract drafting, and supporting production units. Sesame is looking for an experienced, self-motivated person with first-rate communication skills and the ability to work independently as part of an in-house legal team
Please note: This is a temporary role for 6 months. Expected dates will be May 1, 2021 and ending October 29, 2021.
Responsibilities:
- Draft services agreements, amendments and renewals using contract templates including those relating to music services, writing services, and performing services
- Within parameters provided by Sesame supervisors, review redlines, negotiate changes, and revise contracts in response to counterparty requests
- Support Sesame production units by researching and responding to questions about talent compensation based on Sesame's collective bargaining agreements and rate cards
- Respond to ''Performer Request Forms'' in a timely manner; negotiate talent deal terms and agreements.
Collect and process supporting documents from counterparties, including W-9 forms, independent contractor affidavits, certificates of incorporation, etc.
- Manage, maintain, and update electronic contract management systems for requesting contracts and monitoring workflow among stakeholders including legal, finance and the business units
- Maintain various databases, trackers, and ''tickler systems'' to ensure relevant information is up to date and that timely notices are provided
- Help manage, maintain and update library of contract templates, forms, clauses, charts; Answer internal and external questions regarding talent inquiries, particularly from performers and their agents (including weekly update meetings);
- Participate in department meetings as well as production management meetings
- Review underlying agreements and Sesame databases to assist with clearance of Sesame clips and other content for both internal and external use
- Maintain weekly update meetings with agents regarding talent concerns/payments
- Update Guild/union site to ensure that most current collective bargaining agreements are available to team
- Negotiate and execute celebrity talent agreements
- Maintain rate cards and ensure up to date
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and paralegal certification or comparable experience
- 5+ years relevant paralegal experience working in an in-house production environment required
- Substantive experience drafting, reviewing, and editing contracts in relevant subject areas
- Experience working with electronic document management systems such as eDocs and SharePoint
- Ability to communicate with business and operational units to provide guidance and to gather information
- Ability to communicate and negotiate with external parties
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work product and service to clients
- Excellent organization and writing skills, and ability to multitask, prioritize, issue spot, and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States
