Part Time Unpaid Internship
Job Title: Sports Science and Biomechanics Intern
Department: High Performance
Reports to: Director, Sports Science
Status: Non-Exempt
Primary Objective: Responsible for assisting in improving athlete performance and augmenting player development using specific tools and principles originating from sports science and biomechanics to quantify baseball mechanics, general athleticism and high-performance capacities. Support sports science initiatives by collecting and analyzing critical data and creating tools that can help the organization form a better understanding of the role of sports science and biomechanics in player development, longitudinal tracking and performance optimization.
Essential Functions:
• Support sports science and biomechanical testing and assessments across all player positions and competitive levels.
• Collect and analyze athlete data using both on field and off-field technologies to support performance initiatives, injury risk assessments, and monitoring initiatives.
• Participate in the creation of new laboratory tools, methods and procedures that will streamline data acquisition and cross-functional initiatives.
• Optimize research and lead the data collection process.
• Facilitate and collaborate on technology validation and testing.
• Collaborate with various internal teams to create screening and reporting tools that facilitate athlete performance, development, injury prevention, and rehabilitation initiatives.
• Assist in translating the data collection and testing results into direct and actionable applications across various departments within baseball operations.
• Support and assist in the development of a robust program to investigate athlete insights and authenticate athlete performance benefits.
• Support other sports science initiatives across the organization.
• Process sports science and biomechanics data and integrate it into internal databases.
• Will perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in biomechanics, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, sports science, data science, or related fields required. Equivalent, relevant experience will be considered in lieu of education requirements if approved by management.
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):
• Strong technical skills and experience with various technologies and biomechanical equipment and data management along with proficiency in collecting data on human subjects. Including but not limited to: markered and/or markerless motion capture, force plates, inertial sensors, musculoskeletal modeling, camera tracking/AI, dynamometry, velocity-based training technology, GPS, and EMG.
• High level proficiency in taking complex test data and distilling it into useful and meaningful information.
• A high level of proficiency and experience with coding (R, Matlab, Python, SQL, Labview, or other coding languages).
• Experience using OpenSim, Visual3D, and other relevant biomechanics software.
• Shares and expresses thoughts in a clear and effective manner through verbal and written communication skills. Exhibits effective listening skills and builds positive relationships with all team members, vendors, and guests. Is diplomatic, tactful and professional in all forms of communication.
