Who You'll Work With:
You will report to and work closely with the Principal Attorney, Kelsey Schulz, and will act as counsel primarily to media companies and also to independent filmmakers and producers, brands, authors and publishers, and artists, influencers, and musicians.
What You'll Do:
In this role, you will have exposure to many aspects of the entertainment industry with an emphasis on non-scripted and documentary-style television. You will also assist with non-entertainment related issues for clients, such as handling day-to-day employment and personnel matters, facilitating business transactions with corporate vendors, and other legal matters as they arise. Your role may require you to perform the following, among other, tasks:
- Draft and negotiate above and below-the-line agreements for television, film, and new media projects
- Draft and negotiate shopping agreements, attachment agreements, co-production agreements, options, and other development deals
- Draft and negotiate production contracts and releases, including talent and participant agreements and guest appearance releases, materials releases, master use and sync licenses, location agreements, and vendor agreements
- Receive training and learn to negotiate and draft complex business partnership deals, content licenses, production services agreements, and distribution agreements
- Assist clients with clearance on their projects, including: (i) conducting review of creative decks, scripts, footage, episode cuts, and films to advise on levels of risk related to copyright, trademark, defamation, invasion of privacy, violation of publicity rights, and other potential legal claims, (ii) drafting and negotiating licensing agreements with respect to use of third-party content, and (iii) conducting fair use analyses and, if necessary, preparing corresponding fair use letters
- Assist clients with union/guild (e.g., SAG-AFTRA, DGA, WGA, IATSE, etc.) matters and related issues
- Advise on and confer with clients on intellectual property matters, commercial transactions, standard labor and employment issues, and privacy and other personal tort matters, and negotiate and draft non-disclosure agreements, service agreements, employment, independent contractor, and other ordinary course-of-business contracts
- Perform organizational, operational, and administrative tasks associated with your assignments
Who You Are:
- An organized and detail-oriented go-getter - you are motivated by a goal and aggressively pursue it while paying close attention to detail and maintaining orderly systems and procedures
- A strategist and problem solver - you have ideas and a point-of-view, plus the knowledge, communication, risk analysis, and decision-making skills to implement solutions
- A diplomat - you communicate effectively and tactfully with colleagues, creative personnel, and production teams at all levels as well as outside representatives of agencies, law firms, and other businesses
- A relationship builder and team player - you genuinely enjoy establishing and maintaining strong personal and business relationships with people, and you have a collaborative mindset
- A professional - you have the ability to work autonomously to manage and prioritize your own workload with minimal direction, as well as excellent follow-through and the ability to find and utilize available resources
You are dedicated to providing high quality development, production, and distribution legal services tailored to your clients, and you exercise authenticity and kindness in your counseling and negotiating. You bring a background of diverse experience - applicants with some production experience plus experience in a complimentary practice area (for example, litigation, labor and employment, guild, risk management, agency, music, or other unique experience) are preferred.
You understand Schulz Entertainment Law is growing, learning, falling short, and succeeding, and you are comfortable participating in that growth. We understand that you are doing the same and are similarly invested in your growth. To that end, you are open-minded and willing to both give and receive constructive feedback, even when it is uncomfortable.
What You Have:
