Job Description
The Lowman Student Center (LSC) at Sam Houston State University seeks an effective leader to serve as the Assistant Director, Technical Services. We are a nationally recognized public comprehensive institution located in Huntsville, TX, which is sixty minutes north of Houston, TX. The Lowman Student Center strives to be the premier destination for our students and the community by providing advanced services, facilities and technologies that foster the development of our community. This position will guide staff in the management and execution of events and provide advanced technical knowledge of the facility's A/V, sound and lighting technology.
Duties:
Coordinates events services within the LSC. Provides supervision of technical services, including theatrical lighting, sound, and audio visual; recruits, trains, and supervises a student production crew, oversees technical setups and provides logistical support for events. Assist with consultation with clients who are planning events and assists with compiling cost estimates. Consults with clients who are planning events, compiles cost estimates. Produces the technical vision for events, including production, lighting, and sound design, as well as support documentation to guide staff in the management and execution of events. Assists in supervision and policy development of all technical operations and services. Maintains a visible presence at high profile events in the LSC. Develops leadership training, student development, and technical training activities for student employees in this unit. Hangs and focuses lights, including intelligent fixtures. Operates ETC, Grand MA lighting, or similar consoles and controls. Operates sound equipment, including live mixing, patching, and use of Yamaha or similar sound consoles. Performs minor technical repairs and general maintenance of lighting sound, and other equipment, including motorized rigging systems. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in theater, production, event management, or a related field. Master's degree in a related field preferred. Four years' experience with technical theater, technical direction, technical production and demonstrated experience in event management is required. 5 years of experience preferred. Demonstrated experience working in a technical/event services field is required. Experience working with students in a higher education setting is preferred. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education.
Other Specifications
Specific knowledge of ETC and MA dimming and consoles, including the dot2 console; knowledge of Yamaha consoles, including the LS9, CL, and M7; and familiarity with audiovisual production and operations, including video production and AV systems such as Crestron and Extron are all preferred. The Assistant Director must have strong interpersonal skills, together with exceptional verbal and written communication abilities. The Assistant Director must be able to forge effective relationships - both internally and externally. The incumbent must demonstrate confidence, professional ability, a keen understanding of protocol, and an appropriate awareness of and sensitivity to the opinions and concerns of others.
