Job Title: Voiceover Lab Audio Engineer, SAG-AFTRA Foundation - New York
Department: NY Programs
Reports to: Voiceover Lab Administrator
FLSA Status: Part-time, Non-exempt, Hourly
Position Summary:
The Voiceover Lab Audio Engineer is responsible for recording and coaching voiceover actors during practice sessions, auditions and workshops. The audio engineer must be proficient in the use of Pro Tools, Audacity, Reaper, and Twisted Wave, and have a good understanding of hardware mixing, various microphone types and their best uses, audio plug-ins, computer management basics and general studio acoustics. The engineer will be required to lead Voiceover Lab Orientations (twice per month) and will need to be comfortable with instructing groups of people in a classroom setting. Knowledge of voiceover is important; as is familiarity with emerging developments within the industry. The engineer must possess superior interpersonal communication skills and is expected to exercise patience and provide encouragement to Voiceover Lab users.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Recording Studio
• Proficiently uses current versions of Pro Tools, Audacity, and Twisted Wave… (Reaper is a plus) during daily recording sessions and trains others in the basic functionality (recording, editing, processing, file saving) of these DAWs
• Helps acclimate Voiceover Lab users to self-recording procedures when Voiceover Lab Administrator is unavailable
• Understands studio recording set ups (audio interfaces, microphones, hardware/software signal processing, computers, audio file formats)
• Leads Voiceover Lab Orientations and other audio workshops
• Assists Voiceover Lab users with set up, activation, troubleshooting and use of their home and/or portable recording studios
Technical Requirements
Hardware
• Mixer basics (knowledge of Mackie mixers is a plus); functions of channel, send, aux, master fader, control room and preamp
• Recording chain basics; includes preamps, gain staging, compression, gating and patching
• Patch bay routing and design including normalling are pluses
• Phone patch setup and use
• Familiarity with storage options (hard drives, USB sticks, cloud technologies), connection types (thunderbolt, firewire, USB) and display standards (HDMI, DVI, VGA and Display Port).
• Understanding of microphone types (dynamic, condenser and USB), polarity patterns, high pass filter settings and pop filters.
• Knowledge of audio/video cable types and their respective connection options.
• Familiar with networking options, such as Wi-Fi, Apple router maintenance and use of standards like Ethernet.
Software
• Knowledge of Mac OS and Windows OS
• Pro Tools (versions 11 and 12)
• Twisted Wave
• Audacity
• Reaper (a plus)
• Quicktime, iTunes
• Final Cut Pro, Logic are pluses

• Voiceover Lab Administrator, All Program Directors, Voiceover Lab Advisory Board members , Actors Center Director, IT & Facilities Director

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• None
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Serve as a conscientious representative of the Voiceover Lab with a clear understanding of the Lab's mission, usage policies, outlined goals
• Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with Voiceover Lab users at various levels of ability and career development
• Able to establish good rapport with staff members, instructors, Voiceover Lab Board members and other guests of the Voiceover Lab
• Comfortable teaching varying numbers of people in a classroom environment
• Able to provide unbiased equipment recommendations to Voiceover Lab users when consulted
• Punctual and reliable
• Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined at the SAG Foundation's sole discretion
• Available and willing to work overtime or extended hours per day/week and sometimes weekends as needed to support Voiceover Lab programming efforts
• Track new developments in software, hardware and technology and work with the Voiceover Lab Administrator to incorporate them into the Voiceover Lab workflow
• Manage inventory of the Voiceover Lab's essential studio assets
