Job Summary: The Sacramento Kings seek a Data Scientist who will contribute to the development of cutting-edge basketball analytics systems. The Basketball Data Scientist will assist the Kings analytics group through the storage, modeling, analysis, and presentation of basketball information. The specific day-to-day responsibilities of this position will revolve largely on building and managing the Kings' internal database but is subject to variety depending on the basketball calendar. Generally, this search will strongly prefer a candidate possessing an established foundation and experience in database engineering. The position will require collaboration with the entire basketball operations department including the General Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
• Maintain and improve current data pipeline infrastructure
• Improve automated validation of internal database, apps and processes
• Perform advanced statistical analysis on large data sets to assist decision-making within the Basketball Operations department
• Perform and present research projects in a concise, straightforward manner
• Provide administrative support and complete general Basketball Operations duties as required
Qualifications:
• Knowledge of and experience working with basketball data
• Proficiency with R statistical software package
• Proficiency with relational databases and SQL
• Experience establishing and maintaining a full data extraction, transformation and loading process
• Experience in statistical modeling techniques
• Experience with Shiny app development
• Ability to work independently and under deadlines, and relate to and communicate effectively with people of varied backgrounds (programmers, analysts, outside data vendors, other front office members)
• Knowledge of basketball and specifically NBA analytics
• Willingness to learn from others with differing perspectives and backgrounds
• Experience solving complicated problems involving multiple points of view
• Ability to work evening, weekend and holiday hours (as dictated by the basketball calendar)
• Willingness and ability to relocate to Sacramento and work on-site in the Kings Basketball offices
